This bro needs to go back to grammar school!

The info in here is good, but this writer needs to go back to grammar school (or should've had someone else proof read this), as it's RIDDLED with sloppy typos. Commas missing, misspelled words, grammatical errors galore. He may be funny, but he must've slept through all his English classes, which makes the reading experience a lot less enjoyable. I find myself rolling my eyes not at the content but at the spelling of "prenantal" vitamins I need to make sure my wife takes on the regular. I find a few like that on every page, which would make this an "F" in English Composition. Come on! Get a handle on the ol' English, dudebro!

Informative!!!

I really liked how this author explains each week of pregnancy, plus childbirth and the first 6 months after. The information in the book is interesting and applicable, although sometimes it does get repeated multiple times. You might not notice that if you're reading the book one chapter per week as you progress through your pregnancy because you may forget what was already said previously. Since I read it straight through, I noticed the repetition quite a bit. Still, I like how each section gives a detailed description of the baby's development, helpful information or insights into what you may be experiencing at that particular time.

This remarkable description of Jamaica in the late 1680s was written by a contemporary English observer, John Taylor, who spent some months on the island. The original manuscript is held by the National Library of Jamaica, and has rarely been used by scholars. It contains information about Jamaica under the Spaniards, about the English invasion of 1655 and about the formation of the subsequent society, including the treatment of slaves. There are sections on the island's settlement and architecture, including a particularly full description of Port Royal. John Taylor sets out fifty current laws, many of them unknown to other such collections. He also carefully explains the nature of Jamaica's birds, beasts and plants. Taylor offers an image of the island before the general spread of sugar cultivation, citing some creatures now extinct in Jamaica; he also makes many suggestions about the medical use of natural products. His world is still one in which certain places are enchanted, though he also describes an island whose main features will be entirely familiar to modern Jamaicans. Buisseret's meticulous work on this manuscript has taken over twenty years and he provides an annotated version of the manuscript, which was originally more than 850 pages and was in three volumes. This edition covers the second half of volume 1 and the whole of volume 2, providing a rich tapestry of Taylor's observations and notes on Jamaica. Most of the remaining manuscript contains autobiographical material and nautical logs. Buisseret's edition provides an annotation and a glossary. The text will be useful to generations of scholars and students alike or to anyone with an interest in Jamaica and itscolorful history. Co-published with the the National Library of Jamaica and the Mill Press.

Surprisingly good interpretation of an enigmatic president

James C. Curtis has produced a surprisingly good work in "...The Search For Vindication". Given that it is only 194 pages, cover to cover, and that I picked it up for 25 cents at a yard sale, I wasn't expecting a lot. I thought I had read most of what was worth reading about our seventh president, and most of it was excellent, but fairly repetitive in both content and explanation. However, Curtis' title gives a clue to his content, and that the reader will not find just a rehash of history, but also, hopefully, some insight into why this man who was paranoid, angry, lacking in formal education, and in so many other ways totally unqualified to be president is now so well regarded by historians. Not only was Jackson unqualified, he also knew he was unqualified, as he himself stated in 1816 when friends mentioned him as a candidate for president, "Do they think I am such a d----- fool! No sir, I know what I am fit for. I can command a body of men in a rough way; but I am not fit to be President." (page 78) How and why he changed his mind is part of the fascination of his story.

Whether Andrew Jackson deserves to be evaluated as highly as historians now do remains doubtful in my mind. However, thanks to Curtis' book, I now better understand why he was so angry and defensive. Much of what this author has written merely confirms my own thoughts reading other historian's accounts. (My educational degree is in Psychology.) However, there are a number of pieces of the Jackson puzzle I have seen nowhere else. There is analysis of events that is helpful, and, there is humor not related to the subject, found on page 182, quoting a reelection slogan for (7th U.S.) Vice President Richard Mentor Johnson, "Rumpsey, Dumpsey, Colonel Johnson shot Tecumseh." (Perhaps I am too easily amused.)

It also says something to me about the value of this biography of Andrew Jackson in the eyes of others: the copy I bought was underlined extensively with marker, as a student would do, and a purchase receipt wedged between the pages indicating it was purchased in the book store of a local university for a class. "Text Book" might scare some readers off, but it is an indication to me that historians more knowledgeable than myself have endorsed it's content. I found it not at all boring, but, in fact, very interesting. After all, qualified or not, Andrew Jackson is recognized as having made significant contributions to the presidency and to the history and stability of the United States at a crucial time. This book helps understand the man, Andrew Jackson in all his glory, and all his shame.

"I have said befor and now repeat, the world is not to be trusted," Jackson proclaimed in 1833. Many of his most energetic efforts while president reflect his self-image as "injured incence at war with the forces of corruption."
