Brilliant!

Lon Milo DuQuette is one of my favorite authors these days, particularly on esoteric subjects. In this book, he connects the esoteric work of Solomon's Key (one of the medieval handbooks of magic) to the traditional work of the Freemasons and the lodge organizations of the 18th and 19th century. Self-transformation is the heart of this system and this work, and he does a great job of laying out the hows and whys of this kind of magical work. I've begun working through some of the system based on his guidelines, albeit cautiously, and I've had fairly positive results so far.

If I have any criticism of the book, it lies in the fact that he expends half of the book laying out the reasons for doing this kind of work, without spending sufficient time on the practicalities of doing them, or figuring out what the results you may or may not get, actually mean. Doing magical work is challenging, and the results are interesting and worthy of deep reflection, but as with many magical authors, DuQuette spends a lot of time on the lead-up and the justifications for the work, but less on the results or on how he thinks they may improve the reader's life.

It's worth noting that this book DID cause me to go out and drop a few dollars on his other works, though, and I found myself highly entertained by his anecdotes and his writing style. An enjoyable evening or two resulted, going through this excellent writer's corpus.

Unusual approach but very interesting

I expected little of this book, as so much has been written on hidden secrets. Still, I found the approach intriguing and reading through the book - even though I do not wish to go the same way the writer does - I realized in fact my way of looking at it was pretty similar.
Yes, I would recommend it even if it is only to confront ones own ideas with something completely out of the ordinary ...

This was a valuable companion to the text. It did not have an answer key so it took a lot of effort on the teacher's part to read through the material and find the answers. It would have been much nicer if had an answer key.

Learning Game Theory? Start with this book.

A very good starter book to get to grips with the basics of game theory. Everything is well explained and I was able to breeze through it and start analysing situations for myself.

It doesn't have all the answers, but what it does is give you a firm grounding on the workings of game theory. Other explanations on the same subjects in other books that I've read don't even compare. This really was brilliantly explained.

Clear and simple introduction, with a few troublesome typos

I'd always wanted a primer for game theory and leapt on this with its low price. I found this book an excellent introduction, easy to understand, no-nonsense, dry in a good way. I want to learn more, and may go on to buy the longer version, but I'm not sure. My concern is that some proofreading really should have been done, not for mere persnicketiness but because errors occur in the worst places if you're trying to follow the logic. In the introduction to mixed strategies, the very first calculation contains a typo (4/5 instead of 1/5, if I recall correctly), which stymied me until I verified, checking the equations, that the author had set it down wrong in the explanation. Similar if less drastic typos occur later, with player 1 named instead of player 2 and a few more with confusing consequences. The author ought to consider rechecking the numbers in the later sections of the book.

Tried to read this on the Kindle, as I am a great Kindle fan, but found the with the diagrams and having to go back and forth to them it was not really that easy. Might get the hard copy one day, as the book actually looked quite good.

About the Author
Nicolae Lobontiu, Ph.D is associate professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Alaska Anchorage. His teaching background has run the gamut of mechanical engineering, including: system dynamics, controls, instrumentation and measurement, mechanics of materials, dynamics, vibrations, finite element analysis, boundary element analysis, and thermal system design.

Professor Lobontiu’s research interests for the last decade have focused on compliant mechanisms (mechanical devices which move by elastic deformation of their flexible joints) and micro/nano electromechanical systems. He has authored four books and 20 peer-reviewed journal papers on the aforementioned research topics.

Nicolae Lobontiu, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Alaska-Anchorage, brings his years of experience teaching classes in system dynamics, as well as the knowledge gleaned from writing four related previous texts -- Dynamics of Microelectomechanical Systems; Mechanical Design of Microresonators; Mechanics of Microelectromechanical Systems; and, Compliant Mechanism: Design of Flexure Hinges -- to produce this solid text for students entering this emerging field.

The discipline of system dynamics focuses on teaching students "how to create and analyze mathematical models of dynamic, mechanical, electrical/electromagnetic, thermal, and fluid/pneumatic systems" for the purpose of designing and then testing systems before they are actually built. While the author retains a classical approach, Lobontiu also introduces examples from compliant mechanisms and microscale devices and machines.

Consideration is given to mechanical engineering problems for junior and senior-level undergraduate students in support of mechanical, aerospace, electrical, biomedical and civil engineering courses and explores mechanism and movement in springs and joints present in "micro-machined, lithographic based devices to traditional models of microscale, fluidic, and electromechanical systems." Offers a "foundation and framework for the development of controllers applied to these dynamical systems." Includes examples and problems at the end of each chapter to familiarize readers with the modeling and dynamical systems engineers are likely to encounter in the future.

Publisher touts the text as "the first system dynamics textbook to include extensive examples from the relatively new application areas of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and compliant (flexible) mechanical devices," and to offer "more ancillary instructor support than any other system dynamics text."

Well organized, clearly written, lots of examples

I'm very pleased with this textbook. Since I'm auditing a course I can be far more selective in what portions I want to dive into and which ones I'm content to skim. So it was great to see that each chapter starts with a detailed list of objectives that clearly outline the concepts and topics covered (often with references to supporting topics in other chapters). I'm finding that to be a highly effective way to discern which chapters are worth really getting into, and which ones I'm content to just get the general gist.

The writing style is clear and direct. There are many worked-through examples (but, if I had my druthers, I'd like to see a few more, especially concerning liquid systems modeling). The suggested reading list at the conclusion of each chapter is a bit sparse, but generally current (at least as current as it could be in a printed text). The summary of MATLAB commands in the Appendix has been invaluable so far.

I am, however, very disappointed that I can't seem to gain access to the online supplemental material. The book states that there is a bonus online chapter and, more importantly, downloadable MATLAB code for the examples in the text. I've tried to access this info using the URL provided in the book, but all I get is caught in a loop that goes nowhere. I've only tried it using IE, so perhaps it's a browser issue. I won't downgrade the rating for the book due to this since it may be a problem on my end, but it is a disappointment.

UPDATE: 1/6/11 -- the publisher was kind enough to provide an updated URL (see the first comment below for the link) and it works fine. It allows access to a bonus chapter 11 (PDF format), add-ons for several existing chapters (PDF) and a Word doc containing the MATLAB code that you can cut and paste. Great supplemental material (especially the MATLAB code).

This book fills the gap between an entry level 100 level course for engineering students and the 400 or masters level. The Alaska based author does a great job filling this book cover to cover with well organized text, examples and illustrations. The real thing . . .

I read this book over four years ago, and I still come to this website to see if any new titles have been added to the "If you liked this book..." section. I have a B.A. and M.A. in literature, read voraciously, and this remains in my top 10 list of all novels (among others, "Gathering Evidence," by Thomas Bernhardt, "Maria Zef," by Paola Driga, "Independent People," by Halldor Laxness . . .). It is one of those books that, should you hear of it somehow and read it, you will think a long time about how lucky you are that you "met" this novel, and this author, if you've never read her before; and you will shudder to think you might have gone through your life and missed such a book, and you will begin to wonder how many other books there are out there like this, some that you know you will never find. This is a serious novel, and a deeply moving one, especially if you have a fondness for literature about children. But this is not a prerequisite. When I began the novel, I didn't believe I could come to care so deeply for a fictional character, much less a five-year-old boy who, for the majority of the novel, is too young to speak. And his dogs! This is a truly magical novel. During the last fifty pages, I could not possibly put this book down, and my whole being was affected for days after reading the book, and I can never really forget it. If you don't like to feel, don't read this book. But if you do, you will rarely, if ever, be so richly rewarded.

This is a story set in war-torn Italy that follows the life of a simple, good child-like woman, as she deals with widowhood, rape, and survival with her two sons.
The beauty of this stunning book, is in the descriptions of the characters, and the emotions each one is experiencing from the point of view of an anonymous bystander. As the years pass in this family's life, it's as though we were so intimately connected with their pain and anguish that we are somehow responsible because we do nothing but watch from afar. I was overwhelmed with such feelings of compassion for the struggling mother, her unruly eldest son, and most of all, for her innocent Useppe, the child born of her rape.
Elsa Morante's ability in touching my heart with words that helped me "experience" each moment with these special characters, is incredible. She describes fleeting moments of love, anguish, and sorrow, without naming them, and yet they are so recognizable, they just tug at your heart.
This writer has an extraordinary ability with words, that special ability to paint feelings so delicately, you are not aware that you have been touched until the end of the passage. And often I would have to pause before reading on, to wonder at the effect the words have had on me. I have never experienced that kind of thing in a book before, and I have read all my life. I'll never forget this delicate and sensitive work.

Incredible!

When I first read this book, I cried so much that it was hard to breathe. Beautifully written, beautifully translated, this is one of the best books of the second half of the twentieth century. This is the story of a young Italian woman and her sons, mostly during World War II. The beautiful portrait of the young baby, and then young boy, was just so moving. And I loved the descriptions of their dog, Bella. As she looked at each of her puppies, she thought it was surely the most beautiful one in the world. Morante captured the essence of motherhood. Of course, life has tragedy, and this is a very, very sad book. But if you want a good story, and marvelous writing, writing that is so beautiful that you are just stunned, then read this book.
