A view in the everiday lifes of ancient times

The new book by Katherine Dunbabin is a welcome addition to the already excellent catalogue of Cambridge Press. Ms. Dunbabin once more proves her value as a historian by showing that the study of Art in ancient times goes beyond aesthetics and the sphere of nobles and palaces. Her work on Section II "Technique and Production" brings to life the craftsmen and workshops that made the mosaics, but also the social relationships involved in the creation of all forms of Art. Another strong point of the book is the quality of the images depicted in it, both the photo reproductions and the graphic drawings of the mosaics are astounding. The variety of subjects shown in the mosaics allow the modern reader to have a pretty good idea of the ambiance and way of life of the times. It is also interesting that at the end of each chapter Ms. Dunbabin indicates a list of related bibliography with recent works. I can only be sorry that her own classical work "The Mosaics of Roman North Africa" is out of print. This pioneer work should be reprinted.

All thru Italy I took pictures of the floors, I hope to make them into quilts. This book is an excellent reference, I could have bought it first and looked at the other sites while I was on vacation.

Great History but a major disappointment regarding images

I purchased this book to gain color references for the mosaics.....unfortunately, the majority of this book contains black and white plates. If you are planning on using this book as a reference for color, forget it.

I wanted to like THE BROKENHEARTED so much more than I did. Any book with ballerinas catches my attention. Add in a bionic heart, superheroes and villains, and I should have loved this.

But I didn’t.

Anthem is a girl from the good -- aka wealthy -- side of town. As the replacement daughter for her parents (the first drowned), she’s always done exactly what they wanted. Her dream is to be a ballerina, and she’s spent all of her life working towards that goal. She even has the most popular boy in school as her boyfriend. So, life should be perfect for Anthem. It can’t get any better in Bedlam City.

But when Anthem and her best friend sneak into a party in a bad area of town, she’s attracted to a South Side boy. A boy who makes her feel like her boyfriend doesn’t. A boy who she falls in lust/love with immediately. Within pages, Anthem’s slumming it, skipping ballet and lying to her parents to spend the afternoons with Gavin. I can understand Anthem being excited about someone so different from everyone she knows, but what I can’t get behind is Anthem falling in love so quickly, and being so devastated when something happens to Gavin. That relationship is an integral part of the book, since it pushes Anthem into a quest for vengeance, but I just didn’t buy it.

THE BROKENHEARTED also had zero worldbuilding. I have no idea if it’s set in the past, present, or future. I don’t know much about Bedlam City, other than I swear it’s Gotham City. As mentioned in the summary, Anthem dies, and her human heart is replaced with an experimental one by an illegal doctor. Other than giving her superpowers, her heart is barely mentioned, and I couldn’t believe dying didn’t have a bigger impact on Anthem. The pacing is off, too, and I really just wanted to skim to get to the end to see if things would improve. Unfortunately, the ending leaves things open for another book, and after doing some digging, I believe THE BROKENHEARTED is the first in a series.

With its premise, THE BROKENHEARTED should have been an amazing book. But for me, the execution was off, and I was left disappointed.

A good super hero-science fiction type book

I have to admit, the premise and cover for this is what drew me to it. I mean a ballerina with a bionic heart, how could I go wrong. It turned out to be a little different than I was expecting. Anthem is a young girl on her way to be a extraordinary ballerina, but soon finds herself in a whole new world and secrets to protect.

Anthem is from a wealthy family, a ballerina, she was also naive. I understand the need to break loose when she is giving some space, but she was very impulsive and didn't make the best decisions, but being sheltered by her parents didn't help with that. She suffers a tragic accident and dies and when she received her new mechanical heart she changed at least for the better, I did like her more than I did at first. She has new abilities, strength, and speed. The love interest, Gavin was the "bad boy" from the other side. I could see the appeal for Anthem, but not some of the decisions she made when it came to him.

The Brokenhearted has a fantastic premise, but sadly the execution just didn't do it for me. The first half was on the slow side, it does pick up about half way through, but with the issues I was already having, I had a hard time trying to immerse myself in Anthem's world. The relationship between Anthem and Gavin was an issue for me. Anthem didn't know him for very long, well she knew him for about a week and was "in love with him" and gave herself to him just as quickly. The problem other than how quickly she gave her virginity is the that she still had a boyfriend. So, the cheating was an issue for me. I would have really liked to have known how the bionic heart worked and why it made her the way she was, but I didn't get a lot of answers on that front. There was plenty of action in the second half and some hints as to who was behind some of the events that took place and it does set up the story with a big cliffhanger ending for another book. So, I'll guess we'll see.

While the first half didn't work for me, the second half was better and was an just okay read for me. I know there are some mixed reviews for this, but if you are a fan of super hero-science fiction type books, I think you'll enjoy it.

What I Liked:

Oh, how I wanted to like this book. I was excited to start it! Gorgeous cover, debut author, Harper title, science fiction genre... it sounded perfect for me! I tagged this novel under "dystopia" as well, but I think futuristic is a better word. This novel had the potential to be awesome, but for me, it fell a bit flat.

Anthem gets into the wrong kind of trouble really quickly in this novel. Right away, we can tell that she doesn't like her life as much as she would like to. She is no longer enamored with her boyfriend. She doesn't like the rich life - she feels disconnected from her parents. Things are perfect on the surface, but below the surface is a sad, lonely girl.

Then Anthem meets Gavin, and everything changes. She falls head over heels in love with him... and drama. Weeks pass, and they continue seeing each other. They get hot and heavy, and that same night, Gavin gets captured. And Anthem? Anthem falls to her death in a freezing cold river, but wakes up, alive.

With a new start and a bionic heart that beats ten beats per second, Anthem has a different purpose with her life. All she wants is revenge. Never mind the upcoming ballet, Giselle, and not getting the prima role. Never mind faking a relationship with her recent ex-boyfriend, who is blackmailing. Never mind losing her best friend. Everything, to Anthem, is about revenge. Kill Rose and her gang.

The story is unique, especially with the bionic heart aspect. I wasn't totally drawn into the plot, or the characters, but the story went by pretty quickly. Or maybe I was reading really quickly. But I wasn't all that impressed by the story.

What I Did Not Like:

I already said this, but I wasn't impressed by the plot or the story or whatever. It seemed kind of boring and superficial, and weird how all of that happened to Anthem. I mean, did that guy (if you read the book, you'll know what I mean) set her up? HOW? The author never explained, at the end, how that guy set up Anthem, and survived everything, and fabricated everything.

And by the way, I totally expected that. I totally expected that one person to come back and screw over everyone. That was sooo predictable. In fact, most of the plot was predictable, once you got past the part about her getting a bionic heart. After the major characters were introduced, then everything seemed easy to follow... and predict.

The characters are kind of blah, as well. I don't really care for Anthem. Her logic is pretty poor. I mean, you go out with a guy for a few weeks, and you're TOTALLY in love with him? He is SOOOO worth all that work? Really? NO. Irrational, illogical... stupid. Her decisions are just STUPID.

Oh, and the romance in general? Weird. There is a love triangle of a sort, but it's not an obvious one, with the two males bot actively trying to win over the female. But I didn't really like the romance. The one guy, I really like, but he seemed more of the friend-type. The other guy was on fire, and then, ice-cold. And the heroine was totally set on one guy, but she liked the other guy as well, even though she knew that the guy she really liked wasn't coming back to her.

Blehh, the romance.

I already said the plot was predictable, but seriously, the climax was anticlimactic, because you know it's coming, and you know what comes after that. And the ending. It's an ending, but it's not. I don't know if there will be more books to follow, but it seems like there should be more to it.

I just don't think this was the most impressive debut, or book, in general. Maybe I'm not being specific enough, but I really just didn't enjoy this book as much as I hoped I might have.

Would I Recommend It:

Not really, no. I'm actually impressed that I finished this one, given all the negative things. It seems heavy on the science fiction, but it really wasn't, which made me sad, because I love science fiction. I think the premise of this book was great, but the execution was not so great. But this could just be me!

Rating:

2 stars. Definitely not one of Harper's best titles, but I suppose I'm glad I got the chance to read this novel!

Good Puzzles, but Answers Not Explained

I like these puzzles pretty much. As an American, I am occasionally unfamiliar with a reference as they are written by an Aussie for an Australian readership, but that is understandable. I am an experienced cryptic crossword puzzler, who does not like the puzzles with extra complexities. For me, these puzzles are about right in level of difficulty - I can solve about half of the puzzle pretty quickly and then have to work harder on the rest. This is precisely the level of difficulty I like. By way of comparison, these puzzles are comparable in both format and difficulty to the two that run in Games magazine every month. (Am I the only person who buys the magazine just for the two cryptic crosswords?).

My one quarrel with these is that the solutions do not provide explanations. Most cryptics do, and they provide an insight into the author's thinking and his/her clue construction. With MacCallum's puzzles here, I sometimes can figure out the right answer, but still do not understand the cryptic clue's relation to the correct answer. For this, I subtract one star.

Easier than some others, but relaxing and fun

I like them, though they're a bit easy for my taste. Compared to English cryptic crosswords, I'd rate them one step easier than the Telegraph and two steps easier than the Times. It helps to know a bit of Australia: ASIO is their internal security organization, Bob Carr was a recent foreign minister, that sort of thing. The words can also be a bit on what some might consider the bawdy side from time to time: "breast" as the first part of the clue for the artist Titian, "ball" as the non-cryptic part of the definition of "genital," etc. I found this refreshing and amusing, but those who are bothered by this sort of thing might want to look further.

The 4th-5th grade reluctant readers on my campus can't read the Amulet books fast enough! Reading this series has caused several to move on to other fantasy series in graphic novel and traditional formats! It is absolutely exhilarating to hear these kids recommend this series to classmates who also avoid books AND those who read avidly. Highly recommended for kids in grades 3-6.

Must have to get prepared for Oracle Certification.

I'm an experienced Oracle DBA but never spent too much time thinking and getting prepared for certification. Since getting certified became a personal priority for 2015, I bought this set of books to study the specifics and get my certification. I was surprised with the way the learning is being conducted by the author. First, the author takes you to a self assessment test to see at what level you are and be able to focus on subjects you don't have a clear understanding. I took the self assessment test and was confident I would know all the answers but was surprised to get only 50% of them correct.
So far the books are helping me to better understand what is asked in certification exams and I'm learning a lot.

This book explains most topics in detail, the author is a very good technical writer

Compared to the one from Oracle Press, this one is much better.

But some topic just mentioned very briefly, this cause my exam to fail.

At first, I thought this book is bad, so I bought 'Oracle Press' one, that one may cover all the topics,
but the author is not a good technical writer as Thomas, and the topics are not in very detail, just a guideline

But History of Beauty is really about the history of philosophical and perceptual notions of perfection and how they have been applied to ideas and objects, as well as to the human body. This survey ranges over such themes as the mathematics of ideal proportions, the problem of representing ugliness, the fascination of the exotic and art for art's sake. Along the way, the text examines the intersection of standards of beauty with Christian belief, notions of the Sublime, the philosophies of Kant and Hegel, and bourgeois culture. More than 300 illustrations trace the history of Western art as it relates, in the broadest sense, to the topic of beauty.

Yet despite its wealth of information, History of Beauty is an odd and unsatisfying book. Beginning with ancient Greece and ending with a too-brief chapter on "The Beauty of the Media," the text focuses exclusively (and unapologetically) on the Western world. Ultimately, it seems that "beauty" serves simply as a sexy peg on which to hang an abbreviated history of Western culture. Readers expecting a sophisticated treatment of the subject will be surprised at the textbook-like design, with numbered sections and boldfaced words keyed to small-type excerpts from writings by thinkers ranging from Boethius to Barthes. The main narrative (or perhaps the translation from the Italian?) can be ponderous and awkward. Only nine of the 17 chapters were written by Eco; the remainder are by lesser-known Italian novelist Girolamo de Michele. All in all, it looks as though someone had the bright idea of translating a textbook for Italian students into English, hoping to coast on the fame of Eco's name. --Cathy Curtis

This inspired book begins, after a little throat-clearing, with 11 verso-recto "comparative tables"—sets of contact-sheet–like illustrations that trace representations of "Nude Venus" and "Nude Adonis" (clothed sets follow) as well as Madonna, Jesus, "Kings" and "Queens" over thousands of years, revealing with wonderful brevity the scope of the task Eco has set for the book. What follows is a dense, delectable tour through the history of art as it struggled to cope with beauty's many forms. The text, while rigorous in its inquiries, is heavy on abstractions, which get amplified by stiff translation: "In short, the question was how to retable the debate about the Classical antitheses of thought, in order to reelaborate them within the framework of a dynamic relationship." The selections, however, are breathtaking—300 color illustrations, from Praxiteles to Pollock—and they grant the text the freedom to delve into their complex mysteries. Eco's categories for doing so (e.g., "Poets and Impossible Loves") and his historical breadth in elaborating them are creative and impressive respectively. Long quotations ranging from Plotinus and Petrarch to Xenophon and Zola allow each era to speak for itself, while Eco links them with his own epoch-leaping connections. Seen in terms of a timeless debate on the form and meaning of beauty, masterpieces like Titian's Sacred and Profane Loveor Cranach's Venus with Cupid Stealing Honey seem, if possible, even more immediate, and related to our own amorous profanities and thefts.

Given the sophistication of Eco's celebrated novels, the most recent being Baudolino (2002), and his scholarly work in semiotics, readers will expect his "review of ideas of Beauty over the centuries," as he so modestly characterizes this brimming and provocative volume, to be at once intellectually elaborate and great fun, and, indeed, it is. Focused primarily on the human form as depicted in works of art, beginning with the ancient Greeks and striding confidently into the age of the machine; elegantly designed and, yes, beautifully illustrated, Eco's mapping of our ever-changing definition of beauty draws on philosophy, theology, poetry, and science as he tracks beauty's permutations under the influence of ideas, mysticism, social upheaval, economics, politics, and technological innovation. A lover of language as well as image, Eco showcases literary beauty in the clarion writings he so judiciously excerpts. Erudite and ardent, Eco contemplates the complex relationship between nature and art, beauty and love, and vigorously explicates depictions of ugliness, without which our sense of beauty would not exist. An historical view of what moves "the eye of the beholder".

Dostoyevsky once observed that "beauty is the battlefield where God and the devil war for the soul of man". In History of Beauty Umberto Eco provides an historical context to how that battlefield has changed over the past 3000 years or so.

This is a sumptuous, unusually high quality coffee table book. While its over 400 photographs are extremely engaging, the introductions and essays Eco provides are absorbing and just as illuminating as the pictures. Eco lists himself as editor, but that is false modesty. His writing here is excellent, erudite and informative and provides a lot of food for thought as one peruses the visuals.

As is to be expected from Eco, his essays cite philosopher that run the gamut from Aristotle and Plato through to Xenophon (though I did not see any Dostoyevsky references though that dark soul was seemingly compulsive about the mesmerizing qualities of beauty) and thusly provide an all encompassing review of differing concepts of what is beautiful by both geographically and chronologically.

This is a rich, beautiful book that will please the dedicated reader as well as the casual surfer who might flip through it.

If you want to upgrade the ambiance of your coffee table, this would be an excellent choice.

Thinking made clear

Only Umberto Eco could write a book that defines beauty through the ages of western culture as this one does. He looks at the great contemporary writers for insight into the great contemprary artists. Umberto brings Plato to the front to explain early Greek art, and brings in Hume to explain humanist style. It is a classical book that should be used in colleges to not only introduce people to art but to thinking about art and words. The color plates are wonderful. What I wish is that the Italian CDrom was available in English. One can see from the style used that this book was a great interactive CDrom.

Reading Umberto's insights and looking at great art..what a wonderful way to spend a morning at starbucks!

Excellent introduction to the Aesthetics of Beauty

Umberto Eco is one of the world's leading experts on aesthetics and art, as well as being an outstanding novelist in his own right.

This work on the history of beauty is aimed at a general audience rather than a specialised one, and as such it abounds more in beautiful works of art and illustrations rather than scholarly analysis of art itself. However, it still contains an excellent history of the idea of beauty, and how artists through the ages have tried to implement somewhat abstract ideas, while philosophers and theologians have abstracted from art to apply artistic and creative terms to entities such as Platonic Forms or God.

One of the most interesting developments in the history of beauty was the identification of beauty with reality as it was in itself. Platonists identified the beautiful with the Good or the One, and Christians planted these ideas onto God. The notion that God was the most beautiful entity that existed, that God could be represented in art, and also that the cosmos in many ways is God's work of Art, expressed itself in many great works of art, poetry and architecture in the medieval period.

With the Renaissance, the concept of beauty became more grounded in human and earthly realities, and one sees far more focus on the beauty of material objects, nature, and people, as they are rather than their ideal nature. Art becomes more and more focused on the material world until the 20th century when in the era of late capitalism, art itself has become a consumable commodity and the chief virtue of art seems to be to cause pleasant feelings to arise in the consumer (something Andy Warhol satirises a lot in his works of art). Yet even in this period, artists still manage to create works of creative beauty which capture both the beautiful and the ugly, as we now see them.

This work is essential reading for anyone curious about Art and its history, and its relation to abstract ideas.
