I was in the author's class when I first knew the word MEMS. The book introduced me the analytical or mathematical part of the MEMS. Although I packed dozens of MEMS books on my shelf, this book helped me most for the design of all kinds of MEMS devices during my master study, PHD research and now work projects. The contents offer readers very good understanding on MEMS devices, which cannot be obtained by using FEM tools . The author, a novelist and outdoorsman, was born in Minnesota and lives there now. In this beautifully written book, he looks back on his family, its history, and its traditions. The title refers to himself, a hunter from a young age (his first gun was a rubber-band rifle he made when he was a small boy) whose own children have chosen not to carry on that particular tradition. Tremendous Insight into the Dynamics of Family

For the reader who is familiar with Will Weaver's previous works (Red Earth, White Earth/A Gravestone Made of Wheat), this memoir will give more meaning and understanding to some of the characters in his novel. While hunting is the thread prominently woven through the fabric of his life, it is only a single thread, and the memoir is much more than a book about his hunting experiences. Like all of his writing, this memoir is gritty and honest; if you think Bambi is reality of life in the forest and on the farms of northern Minnesota, don't read this memoir. But if you want an honest insight into the dynamics of family traditions disappearing, literally and figuratively, this is an interesting and, at times, heart-wrenching read.

This short book was an enjoyable read. While centered around the author's hunting life the book largely involves the author's family relationships and the hunting traditions that were passed down from generation to generation or not as the case might be. The hunting stories include both wingshooting for upland game and waterfowl and Wisconsin deer hunting.

Rico Pfirstinger studied communications and has been working as a journalist, publicist, and photographer since the mid-'80s. Great Tips, but hard to find them - Get your highlighter ready

This is a good book for XT-1 users. However as expert tips I have to weed through a bunch of general photography knowledge material just to find camera specifics. And its not like you can just skip parts that seem familiar as all the gems are buried. This makes this book hard to use on a practical level and will require several reads and camera time.

For example, there is an entire section on using JPG+RAW presenting arguments for the case. Most of this applies to any photography, but buried in there is specifically what the camera does better for internal JPG than post processing allows.

Over all, the gems of Fuji specific data are worth the purchase, just expect that you would have to work for them. Save your self a lot of time on the second read, highlight the good stuff as you go. The Author would help us all if there were a couple of pages in an appendix which just pointed out the gems and cross referenced some page numbers for more info.

Great info on XT1 and Digital Image Making!

After a long hiatus (as film died, so had my passion for photography), I have returned to the land of light drawing. In my search for something I could understand, I found the XT-1 and its lenses with f-stop rings and bodies with mechanical shutters... something important to an old grognard as myself. I decided to go back to my original passion, and found that digital held its own secrets, its own photographic language, and this piqued my interest. This book not only covers the basic concepts one should learn to excel in photography, but also, and in plain clear speech, covers those digital nuances that will help those who want to excel in the digital realm. A great read... so glad I bought the book. Highly recommended.

Ok for beginners

A few gems of helpful information about specific Fuji X-T1 uses stuffed in the pages of some very elementary information, good only for a beginner looking to understand the basic uses of any DSLR. I wouldn't spend the $12 on this again (Kindle Version), because 95% of the information was already known to me, as I've been shooting for some years now. If you are looking to unlock the hidden secrets to your X-T1, look elsewhere. If you need a good basic understanding of photography such as ISO and the like, and how to apply that to the X-T1, this may be helpful.

Don’t You Touch That Dial

“Don’t you touch that dial, we will be right back with the final count after these messages”! Reality television is often viewed as a fad or guilty pleasure. In fact when I talk about the shows that I am interested in they’re often referred to as my guilty pleasures. Leigh Edwards does a fantastic job diving deeper into the world of reality television and disparaging that sort of thinking with her book The Triumph of Reality TV: The Revolution In American Television. She thoroughly explains why reality TV has exploded into an art form rather than a mere past time in recent years. One of the points she makes is how reality TV shows follow popular media trends. I thought about the shows that have come out recently and realized she is absolutely right. One show in particular came to mind, the new fashion show that aired titled “Bye Felicia” this phrase has been trending for quite some time and next thing we know a reality show surfaces. Edwards touches on the different types of reality shows and why they are appealing to certain demographics. Some of the types she mentions are gender wars, family circus, and emotional appeals (which happened to be my favorite chapter of course). Not only does she explore different types of shows but she also takes us on a journey through the world of reality TV from a marketing perspective. Taking Keeping Up With The Kardashians for example, Edwards explains the multiplatform the show established with its multiple spin-offs, games, and merchandise coupled with the show. I recommend this book to anyone that has ever felt like reality TV has lost its appeal, or to anyone interested in learning more about reality television. After reading this book one thing is for certain, I no longer feel bad about staying tuned.

The Reality Factor - societal looking glass self

If you have recently been to see a movie you have probably seen a preview for a television show while waiting for the feature. Perhaps a video game teaser was on the monitor over the snack bar before entering as well related to the newest sci-fi flick. Who pays attention to the connections all these messages have? Truthfully, reading "The Trimph of Reality TV" by Leigh Edwards highlights not only the connections but the work media content that is often scoffed at is doing and I, for one, have been much more tuned in to the intentional muliplatform media context, bare presentation (performance?) of tough social issues that may not be socially appropriate to discuss or could even be stigmatizing. This book is written by an academic so expect an academic writing style despite the overall topic of popular media. The message that reality TV is both a product of society and a means of societal change is accessible for the interested reader.

I have read many 100's if not 1000's of self help books over the last 17 years. I use this knowledge as a Peak Performance and Business Consultant. I am always reading new books within the self development field. I received this book via the Amazon Vine programme to review.

Firstly the title could be a little misleading for some. This book is a holistic approach to career counselling and mental coaching techniques. What I mean by this is that it tries to analyse and help you realise a more positive mindset and self belief, whilst also giving you job searching, CV, and interview techniques. In my experience so many people fail at career change, job interview or even job applications, as they aim too low, given their innate abilities and don't adopt the correct strategies for job applications. This book will help you to stop this from happening. In essence most people do not analyse all their skills and form a career around what they can do best, but this book will help you identify what is needed. This book gives you a myriad of strategies with worksheets, that will help you define what you are good at, whilst increasing your self confidence to apply for jobs outside of your comfort zone.

I think this is one of the best book I have read on this subject. You can see my other reviews for books on CV's and Interviews etc, but I have to say, this is the best "holistic" book I have now read on this subject.

Valuable resource for those in the trenches

For anyone who actually works as a game programming professional, I'd highly recommend this book. Those of you looking for general-purpose interesting programming tidbits, try one of Scott Meyer's books instead, which I'd recommend to ANY C++ programmer, not game programmers.
One thing to note: I've heard claims (regarding this and previous books in the series) that these books are simply pre-existing articles pulled from the web and other sources and packed into a collection to be resold. This is nonsense - every article in the book was submitted by programmers, and was exclusively commissioned and paid for by the publisher for use in this series. You won't find these articles floating around on the net. Moreover, because these articles are commissioned, peer-reviewed, and professional edited, the overall quality is much higher than random articles found on the net.
Overall, this book, and the entire series for that matter, gets my highest recommendation. You're naturally not going to find every article or topic useful or relevant, but if you're actually in the trenches, the likelyhood of finding at least one article that really helps you out is likely high. In my experience, simply finding one really valuable article is worth the price of the book alone.

While normally, I don't write reviews, I HAVE to disagree with a previous review on this.. Someone wrote the matrix calculations were wrong on "Real time UI input in 3D games", and its simply not true. I'm using this gem currently and found it to work wonderfully! I found the book to be good overall, with a few minor publishing errors, but still good and worth the investment.
Like Gems 1 and 2, its a must have for any game programmer shelf... I'm finding more and more modern approaches to problems, vertex shading, etc in the newer gems series.. Gems 1 holds a special place in my heart because of how breakthrough it was, but this, which not as staggering in its signficance, is just as important to the modern game programmer.

I got his book for my husband, who is a programmer, and this one is his favorite of the series. He refers to it on a regular basis, and he says it has saved him valuable time. The graphics sections are especially usefull. A handy reference book for any programmer.
