Bandits at Sea: A Pirates ReaderFrom Brand: NYU Press

The romantic fiction of pirates as swashbuckling marauders terrorizing the high seas has long eclipsed historical fact. Bandits at Sea offers a long-overdue corrective to the mythology and the mystique which has plagued the study of pirates and served to deny them their rightful legitimacy as subjects of investigation.

With essays by the foremost scholars on these countercultural "social bandits"as Lingua Franca recently dubbed themthis collection examines various aspects of the phenomenon in the three main areas where it occurred: the Caribbean/Atlantic, the Mediterranean, and East Asia. We come to understand who pirates were, as well as the socio-economic contexts under which they developed and flourished.

Comparisons between various types of piracy illustrate differences in practice and purpose between pirates of different areas; social histories, including examinations of women pirates and their historical significance and circumstances, offer similar insight into the personal lives of pirates from diverse regions. Far from serving as dens of thieves, pirate ships were often highly regulated microcosms of democracy. The crews of pirate vessels knew that majority rule, racial equality and equitable division of spoils were crucial for their survival, marking them as significantly more liberal than national governments.

Scholars, students and a general audience ever intrigued by talesand now truthsof piracy on the high seas will welcome Bandits at Sea.

From Publishers Weekly
With titles like "Black Men Under the Black Flag" and "The Practice of Homosexuality Among the Pirates of China," the 16 scholarly essays of Bandits at Sea: A Pirates Reader deliberately set out to explode myths and stereotypes. C.R. Pennell (Morocco Since 1930), senior lecturer at Australia's university of Melbourne, has gathered foremost experts on these most romanticized of murderous predators, some of whom are shown to have had sophisticated anti-statist and class conscious ideas about what they were doing.

Review

"Long overdue! Stunning in breadth and depth, Bandits at Sea is the pirate historian's who's-who rendesvous. Pennell has pulled together for the first time the best and most recent scholarly work on piracy in the context of the wider world. A fresh look at an old topic. Highly recommended!"

-Kris Lane,College of William & Mary

"Bandits at Sea provides the first comprehensive, multi-disciplinary approach to piracy. From history to geography, economics to sociology, sexuality to politics, Pennell's anthology brings together the best of current scholarship."

-Peter Galvin,Author of Patterns of Pillage: A Geography of Caribbean-based Piracy,1536--1718

"A thoroughly worthy and groundbreaking addition to the historiography of crime at sea."

-Sea History

"Each of the twelve authors deftly plumb the depths of documentary sources, literary analyses, personal observations, biographical and historical accounts to improve vastly on the seemingly two-dimensional nature of the pirate."

-The Great Circle: Journal of the Australian Association for Maritime History

"Technically well produced, with a generous allowance of illustrative plates and a good index."

-S. D. Smith,International Journal of Maritime History

never dry (much like the seas
By RW
Historians and romantics alike can be intrigued (I conside myself both). An array of topics, from various academically rigorous writers, never dry (much like the seas :) ) and meets the expectation of research too often unmet in the genre. I'm glad I chose this book!

Complicated look at piracy
By stmaan01
This book is a very detailed discussion about golden age piracy in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and Asian waters. If you do not have a general background of pirates, this book could be rather difficult to grasp, as it is a compilation of essays and articles from scholars and experts. Great for college classrooms.

Shoot!: The Notebooks of Serafino Gubbio, Cinematograph Operator (Cinema and Modernity), by Luigi Pirandello

Originally published in Italian in 1915, Shoot! is one of the first novels to take as its subject the heady world of early motion pictures. Based on the absurdist journals of fictional Italian camera operator Serafino Gubbio, Shoot! documents the infancy of film in Europe—complete with proto-divas, laughable production schedules, and cost-cutting measures with priceless effects-—and offers a glimpse of the modern world through the camera's lens.

Shoot!, presented here in its 1927 English translation, is a classic example of Nobel Prize-winning Sicilian playwright Luigi Pirandello's (1867-1936) literary talent and genius for blurring the line between art and reality. From the film studio Kosmograph, Pirandello's Gubbio steadily winds the crank of his camera by day and scribbles withhis pen by night, revealing the world both mundane and melodramatic that unfolds in front of his camera. Through Gubbio's narrative—saturated with fantasy and folly—Pirandello grapples with the philosophical implications of modernity. Like much of Pirandello's work, Shoot! parodies human weaknesses, drawing attention to the themes of isolation and madness as emerging tendencies in the modern world.

Enhanced by new critical commentaries, Shoot! is an entertaining caricature, capturing early twentieth-century Italian filmmaking and revealing its truths as only a parody can.

Review
"One cannot deny that Pirandello's plays and novels reveal a surprising individuality - ironic, inventive, and sometimes fantastical.... He serves up old wine in new bottles, carrying the thoughts and emotions of men into striking and unusual situations, replenishing their force by shifting their orbit from the commonplace to the extraordinary." - New York Times (1927)"

“The Figure: Painting Drawing and Sculpture, has the look of a high-end coffee table decoration, but don’t judge this book just by its Martha Mayer Erlebacher cover. Inside, you will find it crammed not only with striking images but also with essays by critics, artists, and other thinkers that air out thematically related historical, philosophical, theoretical, and technical issues. The Figure is an ambitious and overdue tome that fills a void: if you haven’t noticed, contemporary representation is coming on strong. The figure is the greatest subject of all — it will live as long as we do — and this stimulating book reminds us... If there ever was an art book that needed to become a major exhibition — or a maybe a salon — The Figure is it.” –Hyperallergic

A great resource for anyone interested in figurative art
By Bob Clyatt
A great resource for anyone interested in figurative art, especially for those creating it. Much of it reads like art history, yet for once it is art history written by people who actually paint and sculpt -- this gives it real authority in my view. Dense reading -- you often have to unpack phrase-by-phrase but you are always rewarded for it, unlike much of the dense but largely meaningless stuff inflicted on us in some of the art magazines or academic journals. Everyone here is connected to the New York Academy of Art, so the book occasionally acts a little bit like a 'day on campus' with detailed how-to technique bits sprinkled in among the essays. Mostly I appreciated reading thoughtful professors discussing the subtle alchemy through which figurative art transforms from stale, old academic into vibrant contemporary art form. This is one I expect to read and re-read for years.

…' contains a large number of good reproductions of contemporary painting
By stevenc
'The Figure:…' contains a large number of good reproductions of contemporary painting, drawing and sculpture which was pretty much what I had hoped for. There is also a number of what I expect will be interesting essays, some by artists with whom I am familiar and consider to be of high quality. (I haven't had time to read much of the book yet.) Of course the book is narrow in its focus, as expected, and might possibly have included figurative artists that I would have found to be more interesting, but on the whole the book is well worth the modest price. I would recommend the book to anyone looking for interesting reproductions and writing by artists and critics.

The art presented in the book is a wonderful representation of the many streams of practice and the ...
By Thomas Wharton
It's impossible to overstate the value of this book. It's focus is on the reemergence of figurative art and the different forms and directions it is taking. As such, it's something of a snapshot of what's going on now and the directions in which figurative art may be headed. The point of departure for the book is the New York Academy of Art, a distinctive institution which arose in recognition of the need for developing traditional representational painting and sculpture skills... something that had fallen into neglect in previous decades as academia, reflecting trends in the larger art world, focused on skills needed to compete in the worlds of abstract, conceptual, installation, and new media art (to name just a few). The institution had heavy-hitter support from the art world including some surprises, most notably Andy Warhol. As the decades have passed, the school has evolved into an institution that not only addresses the skill/craft areas of art making, but also issues of content. This is something that separates it from most of the academic atelier schools which have sprung up all over the country and around the world.

The essays are broken into three large sections, one centering on the past heritage, one on the present practice, and one addressing the possible future. The essays are from an assortment of teachers at the school, practicing artists (graduates), and art critics, so the points of view are wide and the discussions deep. Some issues of technique and approach are touched on as are relevant to the author.

This is a serious book and some of the writing is dense and very thought provoking... something that separates it from much of the fluff and bravado that surrounds writing about figurative art today. It will be an important read for any artist, collector, or general reader interested in the vitality and challenges faced by figurative painters today.

The art presented in the book is a wonderful representation of the many streams of practice and the work is beautifully reproduced and generous in size, making it a visual treat as well...

Highly Recommended.

Opening salvo top notch Science Fiction series
By Kilgore Gagarin
First, this does not read like a translation. Ken Liu's translation of Cixin Liu's original Chinese language novel, "San ti" (2008) comes across seamlessly in the spare, translated English prose (though I cannot speak as to the authenticity of the translation, rather, just the style). Ken Liu sprinkles footnotes throughout the novel giving some useful background with regards to the Chinese Cultural Revolution of the 1960's and 1970's, as well as background in math and physics.

The plot's political and scientific setting reminded me quite a bit of the writing of Gregory Benford, specifically, his novel Timescape. If I were to hazard a guess, if you like Benford's writing, you'll enjoy this novel. If you dislike Benford (he isn't everyone's cup of tea) you might want to pass on this. This is very much hard core, traditional science fiction. The backdrop of China's Cultural Revolution gives a memorable setting. Cixin Liu's personal experiences as a Chinese citizen (a young child - he was born in 1963) lends a degree of authenticity to that aspect of the novel.

Please, please, please read at least to the halfway point. Mr. Liu's plot slowly and steadily increases the pace. I loved the entire book, but one fellow reader was going "meh" until she read enough to tell me SHE wants to read the entire series now. If you find yourself thinking, "What's the big deal" just keep on going. This is a FUN read!

Note that this is the first of an original trilogy by the author, and I'm hooked. Try to avoid reviews that give too much of the plot away and just enjoy the work. Having never read this author before, I can see why he is one of the best selling science fiction writers in China. With this series I think he's about to widen his audience.

UPDATE: I read this book again and it has led me to preorder the next in the trilogy, The Dark Forest, which doesn't even come out in English until some time in 2015.

Science Fiction that Relies Heavily on Physics
By Nancy Famolari
Ye Wenjie, a young astrophysicist, suffered during the Chinese Cultural Revolution seeing her physicist father killed by an out of control group of young students. For awhile she buries herself in the forests as part of the Construction Corps, sawing down irreplaceable old trees. This experience like the Cultural Revolution convinces Ye Wenjie that humanity is not redeemable.

Her father's past as a famous physicist follows her into the Construction Corps. Before she is convicted, she's whisked away to a remote antenna station to serve as a technician. She intends to spend the rest of her life there, but events push her into the forefront of a new revolution, one to discredit science.

The book moves back and forth between Ye Wenjie's experiences and Wang Maio's. Wang is an applied physicist working on nanomaterial. He is drawn into the investigation of why so many famous scientists are committing suicide. At first he doesn't see how he fits the mold, but as the investigation progresses he gets caught up in the three body problem.

This is one of the best science fiction books I have ever read. The background relies heavily on physics which makes it fascinating. The author does an excellent job of weaving real concepts into his story. If you enjoy physics, this is a must read.

Wang and Ye are good characters. Wang grows as he faces the looming catastrophe. Ye is an enclosed woman who hides deep secrets. However, my favorite character was Da Shi. Unlike the scientists, he is a pragmatic observer who doesn't worry about theory. He looks at life. His common sense is one of the most refreshing parts of the book.

I highly recommend this book. It's the first book in a trilogy. The other two books are not available yet. If you like reading really good science fiction, you'll love this book.

Completely spectacular and engaging
By Jason Stokes
As a longtime fan of science fiction, from pulpy schlock to the deep, literary works, I was quite curious to read this Chinese book that has become a bestseller, and see how it might differ. It doesn't, really, though it is completely and totally Chinese, from well footnoted history to the language used. I particularly appreciated the translator's hard work to maintain the Chinese spirit of the book while creating something understandable for Americans.

I found this book engaging from start to finish, and could not put it down. My only regret is that the second book is not yet available.

Captain Harding and His Men, by Elliott Mackle

When a C-130 bound for Southeast Asia explodes on takeoff at remote Wheelus Air Base, Libya, handsome, hard-charging Captain Joe Harding instinctively realizes that the cargo list - ''medical supplies and radio tubes'' - was faked. When Joe's newly-married workout buddy does a swan dive off a fifth story balcony in downtown Tripoli, Joe refuses to accept the semi-official verdict: suicidal depression.

And when Joe's tennis partner, the son of the American ambassador, decides to celebrate his eighteenth birthday by appearing unannounced at Joe's BOQ door, the potential difficulties of their love-match must be addressed - seriously and without delay.

Continuing the adventures and misadventures begun in Elliott Mackle's award-winning Captain Harding's Six-Day War, Joe and his fellow officers and airmen contend with a highly decorated but sexually abusive wing commander (who happens to be Joe's boss), a closeted Pentagon official fighting to save his career, a CIA agent who may be an imposter, and shipments of British weapons that fall into the hands of anti-royalist rebels. When a kidnapping goes terribly wrong, Joe must fight for everything he holds dear: duty, honor, country and love.

Riveting suspense novel by one of my favorite authors.
By Bob Lind
In Captain Joe Harding's stint at Wheelus AFB in Libya, one thing he learned to expect is the unexpected, and to document the heck out of any unusual event, since it may come back to him again. That is exactly what he followed, following the crash (with one casualty) of a C130 transport (with one casualty), and again when a fellow officer is killed in an unexplained fall from the top of a casino tower. Putting the pieces together, Joe learns that there may be CIA involvement in the murders, which may also impact on others at Wheelus, including one of his best friends there. Meanwhile, Joe also agonizes over a misstep in his developing relationship with Cotton, the 18 year old son of the American ambassador.

This is the author's sequel to "Captain Harding's Six Day War," and I recommend that be read before this one (The author does provide some back-story, but my opinion is that it would be difficult to appreciate without having read the first book). Like the first book, he paints a concise, realistic and suspenseful view of the political, military and human complications of war, and this is even more engaging on several levels. Don't miss this one. Five stars out of five.

A great second entry in the series
By Amazon Customer
"Captain Harding and His Men" is the follow to "Captain Harding's Six-Day War," and is even better than that terrific book. Both follow in the footsteps of Ensan Case's "Wingmen," as stories based on intimate knowledge of the military and the problems of being gay and a committed service member.
In "Men," Joe Harding is still at Wheelus AFB in Libya, a backwater during the Vietnam War, "a very large summer camp with a filling station attached." For an ambitious Captain, there's not much chance of advancement. A plane crashes into that routine existence and escalates from an accident into a clue to a clandestine arms deal that threatens Harding and his friends.
You really have to read "Captain Harding's Six-Day War" before this one. Although Mackle gives good, quick reminders about relevant parts of the earlier book, it will still be tough going for anyone who hasn't read it. In "Men" Captain Joe Harding once again is dealing with his own sometimes reckless behavior, while he shows a strain of brilliance in dealing with regulations that are being subverted by others. Not all the military guys are bad guys, and not all the gay guys are good guys, so the story is nuanced. Readers will find themselves caring about Joe Harding and his men.
Mackle pays his readers the compliment of not writing down to them. You have to pay attention, or you'll miss some subtle shift. There's gay sex here, but all of it exists to forward the character development and plot. What's exciting for Mackle's fans is that there are plenty of hints about upcoming sequels (I hope plural) as Captain Harding applies for a transfer to Vietnam to get the experience he needs to move up the military ladder.

Review by Erastes

Some books take a while to get into--not so anything I've read from Elliott Mackle, and this is no exception. Right from the get-go we are thrust into Captain Harding's narrative (first person) and within a very few pages, even if you hadn't read the first in this series (Captain Harding's Six Day War) you are up to speed with the good captain and his sit-rep. (ho ho, using jargon because of the military theme.)

In this book he's up against some very powerful forces, the CIA, the American Ambassador to Libya, his cute boyfriend's parents (one of whom is the Ambassador) and a shadowy plot of stolen weapons, a suspected coup, and silenced (murdered) soldiers. Harding doesn't want to save the world, particularly, but he'd like his own to continue relatively unendangered. But seeing as his Lieutenant-Colonel knows he's gay, and there's also a straight buddy who knows his secrets, a beat-off buddy Major, a 17 year old boyfriend and more skeletons in his closet than Hercule Poirot, things can often get a bit hairy.

The main thing I've gleaned about Captain Harding and his book is that I NEVER want to get into the forces, and that goes double for being an officer. The level of intrigue, political shennanigans, hypocrisy and downright double dealing that goes on makes my head spin. I doubt that all units are quite as much as a hot-bed as Wheelus is in the late 1960's but I bet a fair lot of it goes on wherever you are. People have secrets, a lot of secrets and they'll keep them until they think by spilling them they can save their arses.

It's the way the Harding deals with it all that makes this fascinating reading. He's not an angel, and he certainly doesn't have any "Give Me Honor or Give Me Death" going on, but in the main he's a really great guy, and he wants to do the right thing and has to work damned hard at making it happen. He's human--he wants to protect his friends but he has a real human streak of self-preservation, he isn't likely to throw himself in too much harm to do it. Although he might, it just depends if he has to do so to protect those he loves.

And there's the "and his men" tag - and where it comes in. Harding is pushing 30 and as full of testosterone as any man of his age. Despite the fact that he thinks that Cotton Boardman is "the one" they are both pragmatic about their situation--Cotton is 17 at the beginning of the book and they both want to wait until he's "legal" (or as legal as he can be--that is, where it won't make Harding feel so guilty--e.g. 18) and after a couple of unsatisfactory sexual try-outs, and getting caught sharing a hotel room by Cotton's father, they cool it for most of the book while Cotton goes back to school and Harding waits on tenterhooks hoping his career won't cascade around his ears, not knowing when or even if he'll see Cotton again.

So Harding keeps himself busy and his sex-drive under control (mainly) by "rub-downs" with a Major, and buddy sessions with an enlisted airman on TDY (temporary duty) for six weeks at Wheelus. If he gets too desperate, there is a steam-room on base where there's usually someone amenable to a little relief, and a bar in town but both are far more risky. That doesn't mean that he doesn't take risks and it's one of these times that he meets a real Alpha male who gives him such a sound going over that he's dizzy from it, wondering if Cotton is the one after all. But it's this stranger that turns the tide of the investigation Harding is doing, and the man that will be instrumental in cracking the case, but not until everyone has gone through hell.

Just another year in Harding's life! I absolutely love these books, and I really hope that there's going to be a third in the series. The writing is crisp and realistic for men (and women) in the situations that you find them in. The mystery is worth of Raymond Chandler as it twists around, buries itself in official red tape and forged documents, and the characters are fully rounded and fully flawed.

I have no hesitation in awarding this our five star rating. More please, Mr Mackle.
