About the Author
Dr. Michelle "Shelley" McGuire teaches in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles, and specializes in the research of understanding of how breastfeeding and lactation influence both maternal and child health and well-being. Recent research has focused on investigating how maternal diet influences milk fat content and, thus, energy intake and fatty acid consumption of the breastfeeding child. Dr. McGuire has been teaching the basic nutrition course for several years and has a strong appreciation of the course, its goals and objectives, and the variety of student needs. This experience coupled with her strong writing and research background has helped her create an exciting and refreshing text for the introductory nutrition course.

Dr. Beerman teaches in the School of Biological Sciences at Washington State University. She is the author of several published articles assessing the impact of bioactive components in soy (isoflavones) on health parameters in menopausal women. More recently, she has been studying the prevalence of iron deficiency anemia in rural, impoverished regions of Guatemala, and efficacy of a novel approach to improve iron status in women and children. Dr. Beerman teaches the 300-level nutrition course for health-related majors (Nutrition, Health, and Disease), as well as courses related to women's health (Biology of Women). She also teaches a course in teaching methodology (Teaching Methods in Higher Education) for graduate students. Since joining the faculty at Washington State University in 1989, she has taught more than 12,000 students and has been the recipient of several college and university teaching awards. Dr. Beerman's years of teaching experience, combined with her wide knowledge base in nutrition, health sciences and educational pedagogy, has helped create this innovative introductory nutrition text.

Missing booklet?

I just ordered this from Amazon and only got a new copy because most of the used were without the supplemental booklet, which I want. However, I only received a text book, no Table of Food Composition booklet. I leafed through the book and it's not hidden anywhere in here... What am I missing? I would have rather saved ~$20 if nothing else is coming with the text as additional info...

Good Book

Nice presentation of information; easy to understand and apply. Lots of colorful diagrams and pictures. Love the tear out chapter quizzes in the back (caution if you buy the book used,they might have been ripped out). I did find one error in the quizzes: Chapter 12, question 9-the answer should be "b" and the key has "d". Other than that-love it!

I bought this book for the nutrition class I was taking. I read this text book from cover to cover (not something I can do with most text books). This text book was well written and very interesting.

Core resource for hedging employee stock options

The SEC in June 2009 approved a change in the CBOE and ISE rules to let vested employee stock options be considered usable collateral for selling listed call options on the underlying stock, as long as its approved by the company, and other steps must be followed. In Getting Started In Employee Stock Options, the authors John Olagues and John Summa go far beyond the basics indicated by the title and detail a call-options strategy that can help employees avoid prematurely exercising options and losing some of their value. While there are other resources that covers some of these topics, such as the articles in the Financial Planning: High Net Worth section on [...], anyone serous about this strategy for employee stock options will want to have this resource handy.

According to the authors (an experienced options market maker and a professional trader), the primary objective of their book is what they call "efficient management of ESOs" to allow individuals to maximize the "capture of time premium and intrinsic value of ESOs while minimizing the risk and tax liabilities." Although they understand the occasional need to exercise and sell to generate liquidity, their strategy, which is not covered in detail in other books, is to hedge employee stock options to increase the net gains. While the topic of hedging and selling call options remains controversial at many companies, this book explains how it can rejuvenate the perceived value of stock options and provide a better alternative to the transferable options programs set up by a few companies, such as Google.

The book's chapters give a detailed step-by-step approach to the strategy and a justification for it. For example, in one chapter it recommends "the 7 percent solution." This says that employees, soon after getting grants, should sell listed call options (known as "writing") equal to 7% of the number of employee stock options granted. The employees should also sell additional listed call options equal to between 7% and 10% of the stock held, if they already own a chunk of company stock. The chapter then covers the steps to follow, for the remaining years of the employee stock option term. While this is a highly technical topic, the information (along with some other ideas for companies to consider in their plans) is attractively presented, with side boxes for key definitions and tips, and examples to highlight key points.

Good reading

Not the kind of book I usually read, but I'm soon going on the Brazos River and had heard about this book. The author writes in a conversational, sometimes cowboy sort of style, about his trip down the Brazos River and camping out of his canoe. He interjects a lot of stories from the days of the Comanches and pioneers. It's very interesting to hear about a particular skirmish that occurred near the spot that you're going to visit. Very colorful. Good reading.

What an incredibly good read. John Graves narrative is an astounding lesson in history, ecology and philosophy, with a command of the English language that borders on meditative poetry. Astoundingly scholarly yet it's easy, relaxing, serene, as well as entertaining and educational. You can see, feel and smell the river and environs as you "turn off your mind and float downstream" (apologies to the Beatles). You best be well read to catch all the off hand and subtlety casual literary references he makes at times, what a sheer delight and added spice to his prose. Shakespearean and Audubon like in nature at times Graves adds a strong dash of "cedar chopper/hunter/story teller" at others. There is an amazing array of characters past and present, chilling stories of Comanche's and settlers and modern day inhabitants, peaceful days and dangerous stormy weather that instill action and fire into an otherwise serene trip downstream. Graves multifaceted personality and writing style is uncommonly literary and readable at the same. This is an amazing book, to be savored a few pages at time, read slowly and enjoyed, just like Graves' lazy trip down the river in his canoe.

John Graves will eventually be remembered as a 20th century Mark Twain. A through and
through Texan, but with an unusual sensitivity to nuance and nature, capable of capturing in
words sentiments that move and inspire the reader.

I once complained to Texas Monthly magazine that they were not publishing enough of his work and
much to my surprise, an assistant editor contacted me and arranged for me to meet Mr. Graves
at a book signing event. I was not disappointed as a some what wizened, sun burned gent eyed me
over while offering his gnarled hand. I related to him
how as a youngster I too had traveled down a favorite "creek" that was soon to be lost under the
flood waters of a new dam. He listened carefully and muttered about progress destroying nature.
I left with his signature and warm wishes, and have read everything he has published.

Very useful anthology

I wouldn't dream of paying list for it, but in light of used copies being available quite inexpensively, this is a little treasure of a book, most useful for anyone with a technical, say a composer's, interest in how they did that magic we call baroque music. This apparently is the score resource for a textbook. There are keyboard pieces, opera scores, religious works, small and full chamber ensembles. Mostly it uses modern notation, but there are a few facsimiles and an unmeasured prelude. The source of each score is discussed, as are performance issues. The choice of composers is of course arbitrary (41 scores in 360 pages) but very plausible. The stage is set by 8 pre-baroque scores: Pelstrina, Monteverdi et al. The printing is good, the format is handy, yet (for the most part) legible. I'd say this is just about perfect. Find a nice used copy for a few dollars, and you can't go wrong.
