Deserves to be Accepted as a Classic of Turkish Cinema History

The best of all the recent volumes which have appeared on Turkish cinema and its antecedents. Arslan is good both on the origins of cinema in Yesilcam - or Green Pine; a movement in Turkish cinema which was much like the old Hollywood Poverty Row studios in the 1930s and 1940s. Arslan also understands how the past influences the present, both in thematic and structural terms: Turkish cinema is un-like Hollywood cinema for a series of specific reasons. He adopts a refreshingly pluralistic approach to his material, acknowledging the significance of both western and nonwestern theoretical models. Highly recommended.

A great introduction to the cinema of Turkey

This is a great book for someone with no previous knowledge of Turkish cinema. It places the film industry in a larger cultural context, offering a greater understanding of the regional culture and aesthetics. Definitely a recommended read!

5 for definition 3 for tutorial

Lillian Pierson has written a remarkable book on one count (explaining Data Science) and a not so great one on another count (actually teaching the methods of Data Science). Based on the latter the usual audience of the “For Dummies” series may be somewhat disappointed.

After studying this book, you will not have developed the adequate proficiency to undertake any of the quantitative, programming, or spatial visualization methods the author presents. This is not surprising. You won’t readily pick up the entire fields of probability, regressions, and Monte Carlo simulation in the barely 20 pages that the author assigns to this matter. Similarly, you won’t be able to program much if anything by reading the 20 pages chapter on either Python or R. As you know, there are entire For Dummies books written on many of those subjects separately. And, many of those actually struggle to cover one single field adequately. For instance, in my view the “R for Dummies” and “Probability for Dummies” are mediocre (after studying them I rated both of them a 3). So, if others could not well cover R over 350 pages, what chance would Pierson have to cover it adequately in 20 pages.

However, this is not to say that this book does not have much value. It really does. And, that is in defining what Data Science is, in exploring all its aspects, in differentiating between Data Engineers and Data Scientists, in surveying practical solutions of how many fields are currently using Data Science and how, and in informing you what exists out there.

Additionally, some of the chapters are surprisingly strong (relative to some of the quick overview of specific subjects as demonstrated by other chapters). This includes many chapters near the end. Chapter 19 on Environmental Data Science is excellent. You can tell this is one of the author’s subspecialties. Chapter 20 on Data Science for driving E-Commerce is also excellent. The author has a surprisingly broad and deep culture on this specific topic. The Part of Tens is very good. Sometimes within the Dummies Series, the Part of Tens are wasted fillers mandated by the For Dummies format. This is not the case here, as this section is very informative with many excellent free data sources and data tools.

In summary, the book is excellent in defining what Data Science is. It is not always that good at teaching how to practice Data Science. As indicated above, this is no fault of the author. You can’t possibly teach a dozen complex mathematical disciplines, computer programs, and data visualization techniques in 350 lightly written pages. As mentioned, it is already remarkable that in that small pace she could survey and define so well all those disciplines (and give you a rudimentary idea of how to practice those).

The book can be used in many different ways.

For many readers it may serve as a pretty good benchmark of where they stand. If one is reading this book, it is not unlikely that you are already half way there to being a Data Scientist. This book will clearly spell out what are the skills you already have that qualify you as a Data Scientist, and what skill you are still missing to be a full fledged one.

This book can serve as an excellent stepping stone to further study many aspects of this fascinating field. Pierson has a very deep and broad culture in Data Science. She refers to tons of stuff, including very powerful open source web based data visualization and data analysis software that most people (even quants themselves) may have never heard off. She also defines well how to use certain computer programs and what they can do for you. Thus, if you are hesitating between learning R or Python, she will provide much valid information on the subject to facilitate your decision. In other words, Pierson provides an excellent survey of what exists out there, and what fields, methods, or programs are out there that you could study next. That alone is a huge value and is the main value of the book.

The How's and What's of Data Science. Along with Basic Instruction in Statisical Methods, Data Engineering, Machine Learning...

Excellent overview and how-to guide to data science (and some data engineering topics). A number of analytical techniques are discussed ranging from basic statistics and techniques of information visualization, to more specific and advanced methodologies for analyzing structured, semi-structured and unstructured data sets of various sizes and data velocities. Specific analytical techniques such as clustering, classification and K nearest neighbors are discussed. Programming languages and techniques are documented sufficiently to begin coding and select techniques which require further documentation. Data manipulation with Python and R, as well as Excel are described and some detailed examples are given. Sql data manipulation is also documented as are tools for Information Visualization. Finally applications ranging from environmental modeling to criminal activity prediction.

In all cases as little jargon as possible is used and these complex topics are described in a way that an intelligent layman can at least understand there application, and those with some background in college statistics or information technology could actually implement solutions using these tools (if supplemented by their help files and documentation). A clear and respectable introduction to data science and some aspects of data engineering.

Great Primer for Anyone Interested in Data Science or Analytics!

The field of data science has exploded in the last 10 years. Yes, data analysis has existed well before that, but the reality is that being a "data scientist" is pretty great right now. So many tools, opportunities, and growth potential for businesses around the world. I absolutely loved this book, and I am a seasoned data analytics professional. It covers topics generally and much more specifically depending on what your intent is. I use this book as a reference to paint a data picture of how business intelligence can help individual businesses succeed. When I am looking for a way to explain a concept to someone who might not live, eat, breath data analysis...this book is great.

The author was not out to write the definitive, historical view of data science. She was trying to paint a broad stroked picture of the landscape right now that is big data, data science, and all things analytics. It is an enjoyable read and I would recommend this book highly to my friends and colleagues within the field of data analytics. In addition, I would also highly recommend those that want to start in the field review this book and come to interviews ready to talk about these resources. It will make you a much better candidate. Thanks again Lillian Pierson for writing such a great primer on data science for the masses.

Very Good book for artists

I found this book in a bookstore and I instantly fell in love with it. Good printing quality loaded with abundant pictures of a variety of gardens. But the price here is more affordable.
The only thing that it's not satisfactory is that there's a triangular dent on the cover! Maybe that's reason for the low price, I guess. but otherwise, it's perfect.

Great Clawhammer ukulele tutorial! Get it if you rally want to learn clawhammer uke.

I'm so happy with this clawhammer ukulele meathod book. Since Aaron first demonstrated the clawhammer ukulele style on YouTube in 07. I've always wanted to devote the time and energy to master the style. I would dabble with clawhammer at times and then forget it and move onto something else. With the structure and lessons in this book I feel I can use it as a guide to become accomplished in the clawhammer style. I intend to do just that. Another great thing is you can use it along with Aaron's YouTube video demonstrations of each song in the book. You will be able to listen and see him play the melodys slowly and up to speed. I'm very happy with this product. The price is very fair for all you can gain through the use of the book and videos. I don't know Aaron personally but from watching him on YouTube through the years he seems like a really gracious,kind,and decent fellow.

Great Way to Begin Learning Clawhammer Ukulele

This book teaches the clawhammer ukulele method in a clear, concise, step-by-step manner. It includes a series of folk songs with tabs and helpful instructions, starting with very simple tunes and building in difficulty. While it's difficult to learn this method from a book alone, the author does a good job of explaining it. He also includes internet links to videos demonstrating the method. The book is unusual in that it is hand printed and drawn rather than typed and printed, which worried me at first, but the work itself is so professional that I feel it is an excellent resource for anyone like myself who wants to learn clawhammer uke.

Nice book but...

Nice book and it has a homespun feel being hand written for primarily a print version and it actually works fairly well as an ebook but it would be nice if the video links worked as actual hyper links or text that could be copied and pasted instead of having to try and remember the link to key it in. I would like to be able to use the book on my tablet device and easily go back and forth between the book and watching the example videos.

About the Author

Rich Shupe has been teaching ActionScript programming to students of all levels since the language became available. He founded his own training and development company, FMA, in 1995. A recognized authority on several technologies, including Flash, Director and QuickTime, Rich is a full-time faculty member in the Computer Art Department at New York's School of Visual Arts. Learning ActionScript 3.0 has been called "the best book on ActionScript ever written," by evangelist and Flash community leader Lee Brimelow.

Zevan Rosser is a freelance designer/programmer/consultant and computer artist. He teaches ActionScript and Flash animation at New York's School of Visual Arts and FMA. When he's not working on commercial projects he works on his personal site, http://www.shapevent.com.

Awesome Followup

This 2nd Edition of Learning Actionscript 3.0 by Rich Shupe is one of the best books I've come across for transitioning from AS2 to AS3.
If you have been afraid of AS3 or OOP (like I was) then this book is for you. It will help you understand the fundamentals and get you started on some advanced topics from a user-friendly point of view.
The unique thing about this book is how it uses concepts we already understand (cars, planes, etc) to ease you into OOP. The author has a knack for explaining things in a very straight forward manner without overwhelming you right away with terms like encapsulation and polymorphism.
I like the intro about Procedural vs OOP. Since I came from a design background with no OOP experience, it's refreshing to hear how OOP can sometimes be overkill and sometimes it's the only way to go. You also don't have to know or use OOP to use AS3, thats also a common misconception.
For me personally I use this book sometimes as a reference but often as just a good read (nerd alert!) A great companion book is Object Oriented Actionscript 3.0 by Peter Elst, Sas Jacobs and Todd Yard. It helped me when I wanted to go more in depth with OOP. Also check out Colin Moocks Essential AS3 book and Joey Lotts Design Patterns book. All must haves.
Some of the more memorable moments from Learning Actionscript 3.0 are the notes in the sidebar of certain pages. There are tons of great links to AS3 libraries that are a must! There is a nice snippet on Garbage Collection that really helped me get it when there was hardly anything to be found from Adobe! Thanks Rich!
Another thing I am excited about is the use of the companion site for updates and bonus chapters. Thats a smart idea. If they keep that up you'll really get your moneys worth! However, as of this review I wasn't able to find the bonus chapter on 3D but I'm sure it's right around the corner! (wink wink!)
The author could write a separate book about the use of Greensock (my fav too) Be sure to check out Rich Shupes Meet Loadermax video tutorials. Great job!
The chapter on Text, HTML, CSS and the TLF is robust and detailed testing. More great examples that every Flash developer uses. Designers should check out the TLF chapter especially.
This book is also a great intro to Math concepts, Physics and Trigonometry. Even though some of the concepts are advanced and often complicated, again Rich has a way of explaining it to you using everyday examples that you already know in order to relate. Great stuff.
The chapters on Sound and Video have more great real world examples that are easy to use. Compute Spectrum! Aw yeah!
If you love Flash like me, then you probably love how Flash interacts with XML. It's a perfect marriage. This chapter is one of my favorites and does a great job with examples. CDATA, CDATA, CDATA!
There are a few pages on using and loading binary data and how you can save JPEGs right from Flash. Custom screenshots anyone?

The companion site also has a nice resource section thats a must for your Flash boomarks […]

Overall this book is a must have if you are looking to get started in AS3 and even if you think you're a pro there will definitely be something in there that you didn't know before.

Poor quality and editing

I was checking this book out for a class I'm teaching and the first time I opened it the cover came unglued. Never a good sign.
As I was reading along I got to page 47 and there is a code sample with a mistake in it. For readers like my students who are new to the subject this can be a real problem. For people trying to learn on their own this kind of error can kill confidence and prevent them from continuing.

You might be thinking a 1 star is too harsh but problems in quality and editing for a book of this type are unacceptable in my mind. Bottom line is a book shouldn't fall apart the first time you open it and the code samples should work...period.

Excellent Resource for Learning AS 3.0

I'm currently on a mission to build an efficient AS flash website, and this book has been the most helpful by far for helping me on my quest. Before this book, I struggled through spotty references and pulled my hair out while waiting to get responses to my questions that were posted via online forums. I now have it sitting on my desk and it is filled with post-it notes, highlights and dog-eared pages. Everything flows in a logical order, yet you can still flip to different chapters to follow different exercises and not get lost. I especially love the downloaded examples and lessons... there is no greater way to learn. A quote by Lee Brimlow on the cover states that this book is "The best ActionScript book ever written," and I think that pretty much sums it up. Great job Rick and Zevan!
