About the Author
Glenn Sparks is a professor and noted researcher of Mass Communication in the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University where he served for twelve years as the associate head. He previously taught in the Department of Communication at Cleveland State University. His area of expertise is the cognitive and emotional effects of the media. Over the last thirty years, Dr. Sparks has published research on a number of different media effects, including the effects of frightening media, fear of criminal victimization, media violence, paranormal depictions and the CSI effect. His future research will most likely involve new technology and interpersonal relationships-a topic he considers immensely important. He collaborated with Dr. Will Miller on this theme in their book REFRIGERATOR RIGHTS: OUR CRUCIAL NEED FOR CLOSE CONNECTION, which was nominated as a finalist for a 2003 "Books for a Better Life" Award given by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In addition, he is a coauthor with Em Griffin and Andrew Ledbetter on the popular A FIRST LOOK AT COMMUNICATION THEORY. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Short and functional at best

Readers should be aware that this is a very short book. Published by Publishers Weekly, an industry trade magazine, it reads more like a very long online article than a book.

It is a brief introduction into the current world of book publishing if you are a writer with a completed manuscript. It is by no means a writing or publishing primer, and to be fair to author Rachel Deahl, she makes that clear from the outset.

My disappointment is that there is not a whole lot new here for authors investigating the modern publishing world. In fact a writer would learn as much from a casual browse of the internet from reputable resource websites over a couple of hours.

For that reason, it makes me wonder what the real point of Deahl's book--or rather booklet--is. It lacks any great distinction and there are countless books in this area that explore the options for writers in much grearer detail.

The release of the ebook coincides with Publishers Weekly launching a writer resource site for writers (BookLife) and I can't help feeling that this ebook is nothing more than a promotional afterthought for the website. Ultimately, it is where the content of this ebook really belongs.

Publishing can be a confusing enough business without hastily packaged, sloppy, inaccurate "guides" like this

I rarely write reviews, but this booklet was such a disappointment I have to weigh in. I expected more from Publishers Weekly, but this short ebook is almost embarrassing and could potentially lead aspiring authors astray. Not only are there typos throughout, but there's outright misinformation. For example, a literary agent doesn't charge "a fee," it's a commission. Only scam agents charge fees. And it's not "a 15% cut of an author's advance;" it's 15% for all income associated with the property, typically for the life of the book. And speaking of scams, when breezing through a section on self publishing, PW presents only two options: Amazon (the obvious choice) and Author Solutions, a vanity press so exploitative that their own clients sue them. I understand that AS spends a lot of money on advertising in PW, but that kind of virtual endorsement could hurt a lot of people.

We need more unbiased, informative, supportive resources to help writers navigate the maze of choices they now face, Sadly, this isn't one of them.

Be advised...

This is an important landmark book for studies of early man in America. It is still in the bibliography of hundreds of recent publications. However, be advised that copies listed and identified as 4th, 5th, and even 6th editions are exactly the same. The Denver Museum continued for years to reprint the 4th edition of 1957 when they should have made it clear that they were not new editions, but merely reprintings. Even the cover of the paperback is exactly the same. The book was originally published in 1939 and apparently had a 2nd and 3rd edition, what ever that means! The author completely rewrote it 18 years later and that is the 4th edition (1957).

Well-written accounts of mathematicians lives and contributions to mathematics. We cross-reference the stories with history lessons, so that they are timely. We homeschool, so for us this is easily possible. I'm sure any child interested in the field of mathematics would enjoy these.

I've so enjoyed reading these! I bought this to eventually read with our kids, but I think they're a little young still to appreciate it. Very interesting short biographies, and well written. I love being able to see the development of mathematics over time!

Well done, appropriate for middle schoolers

The selections are written in lightly fictionalized story form, which disappointed me somewhat. I really wanted to buy a book of biographies written for kids. However, the stories are clear, enjoyable and appropriate for the audience: my sixth grade math class. I plan to read these stories out loud to them over the course of the year.

The book includes a section with additional references, as well as a list of relevant topics to match each mathematician's story.

These aren't true biographies; there is interesting and relevant information, but you or your students might be motivated to investigate farther. I bought a couple of biographical books, as well, but they weren't appropriate for kids. Will combine them for a more complete story.
