“Introduction to Reconfigurable Computing” provides a comprehensive study of the field Reconfigurable Computing. It provides an entry point to the novice willing to move in the research field reconfigurable computing, FPGA and system on programmable chip design. The book can also be used as teaching reference for a graduate course in computer engineering, or as reference to advance electrical and computer engineers. It provides a very strong theoretical and practical background to the field of reconfigurable computing, from the early Estrin’s machine to the very modern architecture like coarse-grained reconfigurable device and the embedded logic devices. Apart from the introduction and the conclusion, the main chapters of the book are the following:

-Architecture of reconfigurable systems, which presents the technology and the architecture used in fine-grained and those used in coarse-grained reconfigurable devices.

-Design and implementation: This section deals with the implementation on reconfigurable system. It briefly covers the steps needed to implement application on today's FPGAs. And focus on the logic synthesis for FPGA, in particular LUT technology mapping.

-High-Level Synthesis for Reconfigurable Devices: The high-level synthesis for reconfigurable systems, also known as temporal partitioning is presented here. Several temporal partitioning techniques are presented and explained.

-Temporal placement: This section considers stand alone reconfigurable systems. Its assume that a kind of operating systems for reconfigurable systems is in charge of managing the resources of a given system and allocate space on a device for the computation of incoming tasks., and therefore presents several temporal placement approaches for off-line as well as on-line placement.

-On-line and Dynamic Interconnection: This chapter reviews and explains the different approaches for allowing communication between modules dynamically placed at run-time on a given device.

-Designing a reconfigurable application on Xilinx Virtex FPGA: In this section, the different design approaches of partial reconfigurable systems on the Xilinx FPGAs that are one of the few on the market with this feature, are explained.

-System on programmable chip: System on programmable chip is a hot topic in reconfigurable computing. This is mainly the integration of a system made upon some peripheral (UART, Ethernet, VGA, etc.), but also computational (Coding, filter, etc.) hardware modules on one programmable chip. The current usable solutions are presented: The book furthermore focuses on the development of adaptive multiprocessors on chip, i.e. systems consisting of a set of Processors and exchangeable hardware accelerators.

-Applications: This part covers the use of reconfigurable system in computer architecture (rapid prototyping, reconfigurable supercomputer, reconfigurable massively parallel computers) and algorithm better adapted for reconfigurable systems (distributed arithmetic, network packet processing, etc...).

Computing, but without the computations

In some ways, this book offers the most thorough introduction to reconfigurable computing (RC) that I've seen. It starts with the platforms themselves, from Estrin's work around 1960 up to this year's Virtex 5 family of FPGAs. That discussion includes mainstream technologies, as well as recent explorations into coarse-grained and other architectures and a few of the commercially failed ideas that have arisen over time.

The next two chapters address basic issues in logic synthesis, at the gate level and datapath level. No one intro can cover the entire literature of the field, but this goes into mathematically proven depth in a few important algorithms. Two more chapters (5 and 7) address re-use the computing fabric over time, first as a formal exercise combining geometric constraints with temporal dependencies and then as a pragmatic exercise in terms of current chips and tools. Despite the amount of research attention that partial reconfiguration has gotten, tools are still crude and researchy. Instead of a commercial tool flow, expect to find a series of isolated puddles. Two more chapters (6 and 8) address system-on-chip issues. Finally, chapter 9 devotes about 30 pages to RC applications - or does it?

Really, it just names the applications and mentions a bit of why reconfigurability suits them. It doesn't go into much depth about the computations themselves. Even then, the discussion has more multiprocessor-on-chip flavor than any real sense of what makes FPGA-based RC truly different from von Neumann. I don't think the term "systolic array" appears anywhere.

I suppose it depends on what you want. Tool-builders will find a solid intro that works forward from a cold start. They'll see familiar compilation technologies applied in distinctive ways, with plenty of references for anyone in need of details. They'll see many of the unique problems in swapping parts of the computation on and off a working chip. RC practitioners take synthesis for granted though - synthesis algorithms hold only incidental interest. Partial reconfiguration, as the author emphasizes it, works only on one or two of the most recent chip famiies from Xilinx, and not at all on the Altera chips that are becoming more common in the RC arena. Applications focus on the embedded - media, signal processing, and the like - with scant mention of performance computing, my central interest. Although wide-ranging and well-researched, I have trouble imagining the RC practitioner who will take this book to the lab bench.

Mispelinks like anything... Not worth to spent money on an unedited copy.

Regarding the content this book gives a nice ans easy to read introduction into reconfigurable architectures ranging from FPGAs, CLPs, CGRAs, etc.
However what hampers the reading are the mispellings that can be found on every page which went undetected for over 8 years and >100USD per copy. Some examples:

My favorite so far:
Page 63: “Figure 2.48. Pipeline Reconfiguration: Mapping of a 5 stage virtual pipeline auf eine 3 stage.” An interesting mix between English and German.

Those I just found by skimming through the pages a few minutes ago:
same page: “With pipeline virtualization, an application is pipelined implemented on a given amount of virtual resources.”
Page 62: “The NISC [92] processor consists of a Controller and Datapath on which any C program can be executed on it.”
Page 73: “…in some extend…”
Page 58: “The DNA Matrix 2.46…” this should be “The DNA Matrix (figure 2.46)”
Page 57: “…the domain bit manipulation ( DBN) node provides…” Do I have to tell Springer where to put a space around brackets? And even in 2007 sentences ended with a full stop.
Page 56: “The Pprogrammable…” Where is the second p coming from? A spell checker would have been useful here.
Page 55: “…an external processor that can be used to configured”
Page 54: “…the connection between PES…” “PES” does not exist, but “PEs” does. “PES” is a new abbreviation and misleading.
Page 48: “Xililnx” the company is called “Xilinx“.
Page 41: “connexion”: This word is rarely used in English (even in 2007).
Page 41: “Local bus segments span four cells whereas an express bus segments span eight cells”. Either it is “an express bus spans” or “express bus segments span”, but not a mixture of both.
Page 37: “…wasting too much LUT-resources”. Since LUT resources (without a hyphen) are countable it is “many” instead of “much”.
Page 23: “Many systems in high-performance computing were built with farm of FPGAs on different boards.” What does the author want to say here? Something is probably missing. Apart from that “high-performance” is wider than the text width, which happens many times in this book and does not look as if someone took care in creating the book.
Page 16: “‘Pragmatic problem studies predicts gains in computation speeds…”. This is a citation from a paper written by Gerald Estin in 1960 and it just needed to be copied from the original source, which does not contain the grammar mistake.

I contacted the Springer representative about these misspellings and how Springer can publish such a book so far below the mark. Reply was: Sorry, but we can get it refunded. However nothing about a reprint or why this book was poorly edited, if at all. So Springer does not seem to care, what they print and if they get caught, they are not interested in fixing their own mistake.

For such a price, I would not recommend to buy this book. The mispellings disturb any reading flow and I have stopped after some time. So I cannot comment on, if the author is going from architectural topics into areas of computing.

Excellent Technical Book in Reconfigurable Computing. This is not a literacy book, but an excellent contribution to a fiel.

This Book is not an English novel, but a technical introduction to the field of Reconfigurable Computing. As such, the book does an excellent job, presenting the history, the background, the architectures, design flow and applications.
This is the most comprehensive and best elaborated book in the field.
I don't understand why one will focus on the English instead of a technical review. I see this at conferences, that people in the program committee who have nothing to say about a paper or a proposal spend time on English. Once again, this is not a literacy book, but a technical book providing an excellent contribution to the field of Reconfigurable Computing.
I recommend that reviewers focus on the technical aspect of the book instead of checking for typos. Not all authors are native English speaker.

Practical and useful overview of therapy with clients with ID

This is a nice overview of therapy modalities for clients with ID, including sections on individual, group, and family/couple therapy. There is also a section on other issues, such as ethics, training, and efficacy. A great reference, and introductory text that would probably be most useful accompanied by a class or other training/supervision.

The aim of Veterinary Virology is to present the fundamental principles of virology to students of veterinary medicine and related medical, biomedical, ecological, environmental, and comparative medical sciences. It will also serve as a useful resource for clinicians, teachers, and those involved in research in many related fields of comparative medicine. The pace of change since the previous edition has been so great that the book has been completely rewritten and greatly expanded. Coverage of zoonotic viruses and the diseases they cause has been expanded as has coverage of the viruses and viral diseases of laboratory animals, poultry, fish, and wildlife. We have tried to weave the concept of new, emerging, and reemerging viral diseases into the fabric of the book, reflecting the new perspective this concept has brought to veterinary and zoonotic virology and related fields.
The arrangement of the previous editions has been retained, but our account of the molecular biology of viral infections is much more detailed and more thoroughly integrated into the overall subject. Similarly, our account of viral genetics, plylogeny, and evolution has been expanded and has become a more integral part of the book. This, of course, is built on accurate and up-to-date viral taxonomic usage. The classification and nomenclature decisions of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, from May 1998, have been incorporated in this new edition.
Part I presents an overview of the principles of animal virology, starting with the viruses themselves and progressing to the infections they cause at the level of the cell, the individual animal host and the host population. The emphasis is on pathogenesis, that is the events in the war between virus and host that we see as acute, chronic-persistent, and more subtle forms of disease. Our focus on pathogenesis naturally leads to emphasis on subjects pertaining to the host response to infection and to the means of intervening in the course of infection: immunology, diagnostics, vaccinology, epidemiology, prevention, and control.
Part II is arranged by virus family, with major subsections in each chapter providing more specific information about the viruses, their classification, their molecular properties and their replication, and on the important veterinary and zoonotic diseases caused by specific viruses. The diseases are covered from the perspective of their clinical features, their pathogenesis, pathology and immunity, their laboratory diagnosis, and their epidemiology, prevention and control.
In order to focus on major virologic concepts and mechanisms that form the bases for our understanding of specific clinical diseases, minutiae have been omitted and much of the factual information is consolidated into tables.

Veterinary Virology made easy(er)

This book is highly recomended to those of us who must struggle through veterinary microbiology. It makes the subject decipherable, and does not slip into the jargon that is so often found in science textbooks. The book begins with intrductory "How viruses work" material, before moving onto the various virus groups. Each section of the book starts out with a general introduction on how that group works/attacks, wheteher they need intermediate hosts, lifespan in the outside environment, etc. Then, it delves further into each virus within that family (genus/class?) with sections on pahtology, epidemiology, etc. All in all, a very nice reference book for veterinary students. There is not much info on West Nile, but there is a nice section on Foot and Mouth. Generally, those viruses which are important in the West, plus a few that are important for other reasons arecovered. Other viruses are mentioned. There is also a small section in the back on prion diseases, which may not be important currently, but will be important to know about, even in te USA (Scrapie, Chronic Wasting Disease, just to name a few.) I highly recomend this book.

Platform Scale is a Fantastic Theoretical and Pragmatic Guide to Building the Companies of The Future

Personal Background & Summary
While Platform Scale is accessible to anyone interested in technology and how new businesses are being formed, I have always found it helpful to know the reviewers background in online reviews. In this case, I am a growth equity technology investor that is highly familiar with the concepts brought up in Platform Scale. I live and breath technology and my ability to succeed at my job depends on my understanding of technology-based businesses. With that said, this book provided incredible theoretical clarity to a number of concepts I had understood intuitively/pragmatically and has allowed me to more broadly apply these concepts across different business lines that may be in need of disruption. As a collaborator with the author on this project, I've done my best to give my objective perspective on Platform Scale, who should read it, and why it is (most assuredly) a worthwhile investment of your time.

Section 1 - Introduction to Interaction First Businesses
This section is fundamentally about bringing readers up to speed on several common concepts (Aggregation, Means of Distribution, Methods of Interaction, Role of Producers & Consumers, Network Effects, Data as Currency) that businesses operating at platform scale utilize in radically different ways than prior enterprises. Depending on your previous knowledge level and understanding of (primarily) Silicon Valley-based platform businesses (Uber, AirBnB, Facebook), you may already be aware of the mechanisms described at a superficial level, but not at the granularity of how those concepts translate into business processes. The author explores these concepts and how value is created through the idea of Pipes (linear value movement) and Platforms (bi or multi-directional value movement). The most valuable part of Section 1 lies in Chapter 5, where the key drivers of Platform Scale are described, as the author does a great job of relating previously known economic drivers with radically new opportunities based primarily on technological trends. Overall, Section 1 is a great primer as to how and why Platform Scale businesses have, almost magically and with great rapidity, become extremely competitive with previously hard-to-disrupt command and control corporations.

Section 2 - Designing the Interaction First Platform
The second section explores how to best build an interaction-first platform from the ground up, which use cases must be accounted for, where friction might be encountered, and how value will/should be created. At its core, this section describes how platforms should have a central principle of value that is easily understood, and upon which others can create additional drivers of value. While Chapter 1 gets bogged down in complex analogies in what I believe are attempts to simplify highly intricate ideas, read on as Chapter 2 describes perhaps one of the most important ideas of the entire Book, the Core Value Unit and how it powers the massive value creation of new platform businesses. The CVU and the closely connected concepts of Curation and Interaction Flows are also explored in detailed, and add necessary concrete context and examples to how one might go about designing the next Platform Scale business.

Section 3 - Building the Interaction First Platform
The third section is about one concept: execution. How does one build a PS scale business from a management perspective? Chapter 1 is a strong summary of the concepts (Interaction Space, Production Incentives, Long Term Value Creation, Curation Mechanisms, Ownable Interactions) later explored in depth. From a personal perspective, the most interesting discussion revolves around how to lock-in users in what are, by design, "open" platforms that encourage movement amongst users and producers. The corollary to this is how to utilize friction, either naturally present or artificially created, to increase the overall value of the platform. The case studies towards the end of the platform are instructive in illustrating potential avenues of dysfunction, but I question the broader applicability of the specific lessons learned here, as we in the very early stages of understanding how platforms work (this book definitively advancing our overall knowledge set).

Section 4 - Solving the Chicken or the Egg Problem
The fourth section explores the old-as-time problem of creating a two-sided interaction from scratch in the context of the very new platform scale business. Instead of suggesting concrete ways of juicing the marketplace, which I would have discounted as likely too specific to be broadly applicable, the author instead takes the stronger path of prioritizing theoretical approaches to sparking interaction. Of the concepts presented, the most salient is likely the staged value creation approach, which the author presents concisely in a case study of OpenTable.

Section 5 - Virality - Scale in a Networked World
Once you have solved for Section 4, i.e. the positive feedback loop is self-sustaining, how do you increase the rate at which it interacts? Section 5 describes two main strategies, several temporary (Termed "Bumps") and several that are more sustainable (Termed "Engines"). The author's deconstruction in Chapter 4 of virality in comparison to contagious diseases is both humorous and incredibly informative. For those that are familiar with the Lean Startup movement and its startup canvas, the author's Viral Canvas's and corresponding examples were extremely helpful in clarifying the concepts presented.

Section 6 - Reverse Network Effect
In The Who's song, Won't Get Fooled Again, there is a line, "Meet the new boss, Same as the old boss." As the author sums up, I can't help but agree that while the creation of big command and control corporations may be ending, the creation of enormous platform-scale ecosystems is just beginning. Given that is the case, and that many platforms are currently subsidizing their value creation for both users and producers, the author's focus on how to scale value without significant amounts of capital is apropos. Finally, Platform Scale ends with a discussion of some of the problems associated with platform scale business and how to best approach them, which will surely make this required reading amongst management at platform scale businesses when funding for subsidized value creation becomes scarce.

Summary
Overall, Platform Scale is a fantastic exploration of the steps required to build platform scale businesses and ensure they are self-sustaining. More importantly, this book also prepares the reader for the platform scale businesses of the future by discussing the theoretical and abstract components of PS ecosystems. Despite some unnecessarily complex examples in specific sections, the author manages to maintain consistent tone and quality throughout what is an ambitious look at where business is likely headed. While PS is most applicable to business managers, investors, and those interested in technology, I also believe the book is illuminating to those that seek to understand how the world works in general, as the principles discussed herein will power a significant portion of the business world, and society, going forward.

Rich with patterns and models derived from hundreds of examples of consumer platforms

Platform Scale stands out among other works on Platforms so far. Sangeet Choudary has proved that the unique style of presenting complex and tough material as simple, clear concepts can only happen when the author lives and breathes the stuff. The principles of design of platforms and modern businesses come to life with the examples he covers throughout the book. These businesses are consumer businesses that are changing the daily routines of people around the world. Yet, there are not many articles or books that cover them with the comprehensive thought process on how they might be built. Sangeet's book fills the gaps in existing literature and also challenges established works to bring more contemporary and futuristic businesses as examples to the table for discussion. It is tempting to ask Sangeet to satisfy the Software engineers who provide the backbone to most of the digital platforms in his future work. But his mission is clear when he says that he chose to write the book for startups and entrepreneurs dreaming to build platforms of the future. The book does justice not only to his target audience but also to any student of business who is curious to grasp the emerging trends in consumer platforms. I strongly recommend this work as a must read for anyone to get to the core of changes happening in businesses and industries around them, throughout the world.

Rowling wrote the books to raise funds for Comic Relief in the U.K., a charitable organization helping poor and disadvantaged people in Africa and the U.K. (not affiliated with the U.S. Comic Relief organization). Grade 4-8-These slim paperbacks are made to look like actual Hogwarts tomes, complete with creased covers and plenty of marginalia scribbled by Harry and other students. Fabulous Beasts, a facsimile of Harry Potter's very own textbook, contains descriptions of 75 magical beasts, written in a wonderfully dry yet droll style by a renowned magizoologist. Quidditch is the facsimile of a Hogwarts library book, which had to be literally pried from the hands of librarian Madam Pince. It gives a comprehensive history of the game and its rules, as well as a rundown of each of the 13 league teams of Britain and Ireland. Harry Potter fans who pride themselves on knowing every minute bit of Hogwarts trivia will devour both books. From Professor Dumbledore's introductions to the price listed on the back cover (14 Sickles 3 Knuts), readers will find a wealth of detailed magical lore and laugh-out-loud humor. Neither book is as gripping as the actual series, of course, but fans who are waiting for the fifth installment will be entertained by these volumes in the meantime.

Gr. 4-7. Because this is a "Harry Potterless" year, kids in need of a fix may find it in these two volumes. The conceit is that these are Harry's schoolbooks (Fantastic Beasts, by Newt Scamander; Quidditch, by Kennilworthy Whisp), with margin notes by Harry and pal Ron Weasley. The concept breaks down in the introductions: Professor Dumbledore explains that the books are being offered to muggles (because the proceeds of the books are going to British charity Comic Relief, a disclosure that will raise the eyebrows of any reader who undestands the importance of secrecy in the wizard world. Nevertheless, a lot of effort has gone into making these seem like real textbooks. The jackets look torn and faded, the print is (annoyingly) small, and the information is well detailed. Illustrations are in short supply, and not every fan will want to know this much about Quidditch and imaginary beasts, especially when the text is so hard to read. Buy several copies (the money really does go to charity), but expect a few disappointed readers. REVWR

***READ BEFORE BUYING***

Being the complete potterhead that I am, I loved this book. I reccommend it for anyone who is interested in reading an informative encyclopedia-like book that you can find in the home of many wizarding folk. This book is supposed to be in similar format to a dictionary. DO NOT BUY IT IF YOU ARE LOOKING FOR A STORY. This book is used in the wizarding world as a guide on topics such as where to find a Hippogriff or what a knarl really is. Page wise, it is on the small side and lacks pictures, but if you love it as much as I do, it doesn't really matter. Multible people gave this only one star (undeservingly so in my opinion). Many of these people did so purely because they didn't research the product (by using the internet or READING THE HP BOOKS) before buying and were looking for a fairly tale or story similar to the new upcoming movie based on the book, not an encyclopedia. Do not let these bad reviews stop you from buying this book. I do suggest actually going to a book store rather than buying it from amazon though. A lot of fun for Harry Potter fans

A lot of fun for Harry Potter fans. My nine year old daughter loved it. She really enjoyed the funny hand written comments included throughout the book as if it were a student text book.
