The book shows that although the different philosophies of action cannot be explained in terms of any one major difference or principle, there are some common themes that deserve attention. The most notable themes are 1) a developing separation between nature and the will, 2) an increased emphasis on the will's activity, and 3) a changing view of mental causation. No substance

I expected this book to teach me something, but I am disappointed. There's not much substance in this book. On every page they have listed a title, one or two paragraphs stating the obvious and some pretty pictures. The descriptions go something like this: "Color. Color is a very important element in creating a brand identity. You should select the color carefully. Here are some logos in various colors." There's not enough actionable advice. Don't believe me? Use the "look inside" feature of Amazon, actually read a page and ask yourself what will you do differently based on what's written there.

I'm giving it two stars instead of one star because there are a lot of pretty pictures and I like pictures. The pictures on each page are mostly random though. You could switch those examples between pages and nobody would notice since the authors don't go into any depth explaining the pictures shown on a page.

Great book for novice designers

I am a graphic design student just wrapping up my college career, looking to jump right into the world of brand identity. Brand Identity Essentials is a great book for students like me who need to build a vocabulary of design, going into the working world. This book not only puts into words many of the principles I've learned throughout my college career, but also teaches me new things. The visual examples are stunning and get the concepts across strong and clear for a visual thinker like me.

I know there is a newer version of this book (that I haven't seen yet) but I love the way the authors explains in a concrete and professional way all the subjects they consider important to include. I use this book for a logo design class and It really helps envision a greater impact in the brand developing issues.

Someone's read too much Kristen Ashley...

The book was ok, yet unoriginal and needed an editor or a better one.

I recommend the author get her own voice vs borrowing someone else's. Kristen Ashley has a huge following and a very unique voice in her stories - and from the heroine to the hero to the setting in the small town you used it. The heroine's constant inner monologue and endearments for hero and his son. The hero's inability to form complete sentences and "alpha" personality. Most stories have a similar plot but it's always very obvious when the voice is the same.

I would give it 3 stars, but I can't considering how much the author ripped off KA.

Overwhelming pain, agony and betrayal are the focus for the main characters in this beautifully written and well developed novel by Julia Goda. In Ms. Goda’s debut novel, we are introduced to Ivey and Cal, two souls that find a way to heal each other. They are bent but not broken and will work together to find their HEA.

Ivey Jones spent her early childhood watching her father beat her mother and then rape her repeatedly. When her mother checked out mentally, he turned his fist and punishment to her! Ivey finally escaped after high school and moved away to go to college. Free at last to be herself she lets her guard down and once more evil almost destroys her. Escaping once again from a brutal, abusive man she puts her past behind and strikes out for a new beginning.

Ivey drives half way across the country until she comes to a small rocky mountain community. The peace that she finds causes her to stay and put down roots. She has always wanted to own a bookstore and it seemed like fate when she saw the lease sign on the door. Ivy buys a home and opens a business, a bookstore called Serendipity. For nine years she has lived with walls built around her heart and soul, keeping the past in the past and not letting anyone inside. Everything changes when Cal stakes his claim!

Cal is a single father with a son that loves to visit Ivey’s bookstore. Since the first day he had laid eyes on her, he knew that he wanted more. But he had his own problems to deal with and felt like it would be a burden for Ivey to take on a ready-made family. She was beautiful, too good and didn’t need a man like him with all of his baggage. A man can only deny what he needs for so long and then he will do whatever it takes to claim his woman. It was time to claim Ivey.

Sometimes the past refuses to stay in the past and you can never really get away from it. Ivey’s past has come to collect and will destroy anything in its path to get what it wants!

Would I recommend this book: Yes! This book is a romance filled with kinks and suspense that will keep the reader asking what will happen next. It has a hot hunky alpha male and a beautiful feisty heroine that will make you laugh and cry at the same time as they work together to find their HEA.

Would I recommend this author: Yes! Ms. Goda writes with heart, humor and a sense of what makes the world go round. Her characters are created with this same sense of love and laughter.

Overall Opinion: This definitely had a Kristen Ashley feel. I don't think it quite made it there though. I thought the H was very similar to a KA hero as well as the small towns setting with good supporting characters, but there were some major issues with the pacing that I never get with KA (see below pacing section for specifics). I really had issues with the major drama being at 90% and then we get an epilogue. I hate that! We need some happy times between the drama and the epilogue IMO! Overall with the pacing issues and all the skimming I did, I would rate it "just ok" 3 stars.

Brief Summary of the Storyline: This is Ivey and Cal's story. Ivey moved to the small town and opened a bookstore 9 years prior to the story to get away from a bad memory of being beaten up and almost killed by her ex. Cal has always been aware of Ivey, but never made a move because he didn't want to stick her with a single Dad. One day, Cal decides that enough is enough and starts to strongly pursue her. There are some issues with her past demons that they have to face, some sexy times, some sweet moments, and some drama...but they get their HEA ending.

POV: This alternated between Ivey's POV and 3rd person POV focusing on Cal (kind of odd IMO).

Overall Pace of Story: Not so great -- and my biggest complaint. I did have issues with the overly extensive inner dialogue. I felt like there were some chapters that I even could've gone without and it wouldn't have taken away from the story. I skimmed a good bit (especially between the interactions of the h and H), and I don't feel like I missed anything. The ending was too abrupt for me too.

Instalove: Yes. This was all over a not so long period of time, so I'd say it was instalove. It didn't feel like the type to make me annoyed though.

H rating: 3.5 stars. Cal. I just wanted him to communicate better! He really reminded me of a KA alpha in that he didn't let the h push him away when he had made up his mind that she was his. I also really liked his relationship with his son.

h rating: 3 stars. Ivey. I read quite a bit of reviewers say that they had issues with her. I personally didn't, because I understood her pushing the H away and I felt like she gave in pretty easily after he pursued her. I wouldn't say I loved her either. I did have issues with her being cold when she erected her walls at times.

Sadness level: Low. No tissues needed (even though it had some heavy themes).

Heat level: Moderate. They have some hot chemistry and scenes.

Descriptive sex: Yes

Safe sex: No. No mentions of condoms, std status, or birth control (that I remember). I don't remember any mention of safe sex practices in past relationships either.

OW/OM drama: Yes

Sex scene with OW or OM: No

Cheating: No

Possible Triggers: Yes

Closure: This had an abrupt ending with a jump ahead epilogue. In the epilogue there was some decent closure with a HEA ending.

I love this book, but........

This is one of those books that only a mother could love. This is one of my favorite books, but all the critical reviews are correct: the writing style flips back & forth between pretentious & wooden, the characters either shallow or dopey (usually both). This book is no "A Tale of Two Cities." In fact, for this kind of story, Thomas Moore's "Utopia," Bellemy's "Looking Backward"--and probably everything written by Jules Verne are better stories....Way better (especially Moore, the grand-daddy of the genre).
I still love this book, because of all that. When written during the 1970s, it was so "out there" for its time--that reading it now is terribly dated. It's almost like watching 1950s movies about space flight....But this book (in its own weird way) was an important book that helped inspire the environmental movement. No, it's not Rachal Carsons's "Silent Spring," but it reads a heck of a lot better than "Unsafe at any Speed."
If you're in your forties (or older), and want a drift back to the "future" of 1970, or you're younger & want to know why your parents are so weird--Read this book. Or if you are an environmentalist, and want to know where your roots lie--this is a good book to read.
But if you don't have any special interest, and are just looking for a ripping good yarn to pass a rainy saturday afternoon....It's not this book, babe.

Ecotopia - worth thinking about

I read this book in the early 90's while living in Corvalis, Oregon. At that time you could see and experience bits and peices of "Ecotopia" at Nearly Normal's restaurant, The Beanery, and New Morning Bakery. Callenbach takes communal eco-feminist ideas and extends them to imagine a new society based on them. I do not think I would like to live in Ecotopia. Parts of it appeal to me, parts of it don't. But it was well worth the visit. Ten years later I still think about this book, and recommend it. If you are an ideological literalist, don't go there. You won't like it. If you want to explore the consequences of ideas and values, you will find Ecotopia a useful place to think about the world as it is and the world as it could be.

Agree with Mr. Leach

This novel is a mixed bag, and it's stayed with me for some time since I first read it. On the plus side, I found the book an easy, wonderfully quick read, and a pretty good exercise of world-building. I also found much to like in Ecotopia's vision, such as its environmental policies and progressive educational system, etc.

BUT...there is something decidedly specious about the ideals represented in the book, and in truth it was sometimes hard to tell if Callenbach was being sincere or satirical. Valid objections about the Ecotopian timeline aside, as well as its obvious hippy vintage, Ecotopia's almost enforced diversity--albeit in a non-bourgeois lifestyle--passive-aggression, and occasional totalitarian structure make even a tree-hugging, bleeding-heart liberal like me raise an eyebrow. Ecotopia sounds like a place that's better than Hell, but still ten floors below Heaven.

Recommended, but with a grain of salt; definitely not a play-book for the perfect society.

Got a cool idea? Read this book before you write a line of code!

If you have a ”cool” idea for a product, this book may be the best investment you’ll ever make. It costs a fraction of a single development hour. And it can save you a fortune! It will probably take you only 3-4 hours to read and I guarantee you will not regret it.

Disclaimer: I know Tomer personally. I think he’s one of the smartest people in the industry and I’m honored to call him my friend. I’ve certainly gained much from our conversations and this book now allows him to share his infinite wisdom with a wider audience. Bravo!

Bottom line: It IS about the bottom line. Ignore this book at your peril – Tomer’s advice is indispensable to startups and established businesses alike. “Validating Product Ideas” will ensure your SECOND idea is as successful as your first. And if you don’t yet have a “first” idea, this will keep you from letting your enthusiasm carry you away – from your potential users and your potential profits.

Read this, build the right thing

I highly recommend this book. If you want practical techniques to learn about your customers, and to build the things they absolutely need, then this is the book you should read. This is one of those books that you read and you know you got way more value than the $30 you spent on it. If you learn something here that causes you not to build a business and sink dozens of hours and thousands of dollars, then can you really put a price on that? No.

Read this, build the right thing, make products that people need (and love), and have fun doing it.

Great book for any who is involved in the product development process. If you are unfamiliar with Lean it provides quick actionable ways to gather customer feedback/evidence. The Best Story Bible Available

My young children (ages 3,5, and 8) all enjoy this book, and I enjoy reading it to them. It has a theological depth to it that sparks wonderful questions and discussions, and it does a fantastic job of explaining things to make passages more clear. The story of the fall, for example, has an aside chapter that explains the fall of the satan and his angels that clarifies the story. These asides are throughout the story bible, and I have learned things that had never clicked for me before.
The detail in this book is astounding. Several times my husband and I have read something out loud in this book and thought, " that wasn't in the Bible!" When we stop to look it up, sure enough, Vis had pulled up a detail that we just never noticed before. The author's respect for scripture and attention to detail shows throughout the book.
Vis is also very talented when it comes to making my these stories dramatic and emotional. The stories are engaging, and even my 21st century kids beg for more every night. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Perfect "Stage 3" children's bible

I cannot recommend this bible enough. We own the Big Picture Story Bible ("stage 1") and the Jesus Storybook Bible ("stage 2") which are both excellent, but as soon as your child transitions out of the need for illustrations, this is the bible you should be using. Beautiful, compelling narration along with biblical accuracy and pointing to Jesus regularly throughout the Old Testament makes this my favorite. My children (6 and 3 years old) love it too. It will carry them until they "graduate" to a real bible-- I'm (gladly) done shopping for children's bibles.

A thorough, much needed text book

Clinical Naturopathic Medicine is a very thoroughly researched text book on naturopathic medicine. It is evidence-based and gives the reader explanations for the causes of many conditions and both medical and natural treatments. It should be included as a text in any naturopathic classes and should be a reference on the shelf of any natural practitioner.

I gave this five stars due to its usefulness in student clinic. I use the kindle version and the table of contents is hard. You will have to go to the organ system first. Once you click that and are taken there, then you will find the links for the different diseases. It does an excellent job of walking you through everything and includes various treatment options. Well referenced. I actually would recommend this one over the often recommended Textbook of natural medicine. I would recommend getting The Clinician's Handbook of Natural Medicine as a quick reference with this textbook for more in depth. Combine those two with the 5 minute clinical consult for your allopathic overview and you will be set nicely.

Well worth the money, you will use it all the time.

Excellent book, I use it all the time. Well formatted and easy to understand whether you are after a quick explanation or more detailed information. I was a little worried about spending the money but I use it all the time especially since having a baby.
