A First class guide to a very promising new way of building!

This is very well written book - a tribute to English literacy! I found ONE minor typo in the whole book! The treatment is exceptionally thorough. It is very well illustrated. As for the subject matter, I was very impressed by the potential for Hemp-crete. It has the unique property of being both a very high insulator AND having high thermal mass. It overcomes the undoubtedly very high level of chemical poisoning which Western attempts at building have subjected us to. It is also relatively easy to work with, and,as they say. 'carbon negative'. Particularly in extreme climates it will prove to be a wonderful alternative. It is a marriage between Western science and the older tradition that seeks to derive building materials from natural sources (both grow-able and bio-degradable). Furthermore, I suspect that it has the flexibility to be an ideal building tool in earthquake country. It DOES require framing, and it is NOT a total substitute for concrete (in for example foundations), but the qualities I have already described more than compensate.
The only problem... where does one get Hempcrete supplies in the US? I would love to try it, but don't fancy having to drive to Canada for my needs.Anyone interested in forming a would be users' group?
As a final word of advice to the authors - you write and organize information very well. CUT OUT the repetition! The book could loose a third and not suffer. But nevertheless, it is a first rate guide to anyone wishing to use hempcrete

GOAL

The goal of Introduction to Control System Technology is to provide both a textbook on the subject and a reference that engineers and technicians can include in their personal libraries. This text can help students master the concepts and language of control and help engineers and technicians analyze and design control systems. The text covers the terminology, concepts, principles, procedures, and computations used by engineers and technicians to analyze, select, specify, design, and maintain control systems. Emphasis is on the application of established methods with the aid of examples and computer programs.

EVOLUTION OF TEXT

The writing of this text began 34 years ago when I faced the challenge of developing and teaching a control systems course in a 2-year engineering technology program. I had just entered the teaching profession after 10 years as a research engineer at General Mills, where I had become fascinated with control systems. I was especially intrigued by the combined electrical, mechanical, thermal, liquid, and gas elements in the mathematical models used to analyze and design control systems. This fascination led to the completion of an evening MSEE program with a major in control systems and a hands-on design course at Brown Institute in Philadelphia. In my course work, we used straight-line Bode diagrams to design control systems. This method works very well for processes with dead-time lags. The graphical approach gives the designer an "intuitive feel" of the way the controller changes the frequency response of the system. I found that this "feel" was very helpful working on plant start-ups. Indeed, the greatest benefit from learning the frequency-response design method was the understanding and judgment it imparted. It made me a much better engineer.

You can imagine the excitement with which I approached the teaching of my favorite subject. I wanted my students to feel that excitement. I wanted to impart some of the feeling and judgment that I acquired from frequency-response design of a control system. There was one major obstacle, however. There was no suitable text for my students. So I wrote 100 pages of notes on control fundamentals with emphasis on graphical design using straight-line Bode diagrams. These notes were the genesis of this text. The thrust of the notes was to bring students to the point where they could complete frequency-response design of control systems under my direction. My role was that of a control engineer, and my students were my engineering technicians. Those 100 pages of notes have grown to become the seventh edition of a 700-page textbook, but the thrust has not changed. The thrust of this text is to bring students to the point where they can complete computer-aided, frequency-response design of control systems under the direction of their instructor or control engineer.

Frequency-response graphs are constructed from the transfer functions of the system components. The chapters on common elements and Laplace transforms were written to give students the foundation required to determine these transfer functions. Analogies were used to develop common elements for modeling and analyzing electrical, thermal, mechanical, and fluid flow elements. These analogies helped students translate their knowledge of one type of component to components of other types. The parts on measurement, manipulation, and control extended the students' mastery of transfer functions and developed their ability to select, specify, and design measuring and manipulating systems. Finally, we reached the point where the students actually began the graphical design process. The frequency-response (or Bode) design method worked very well, but constructing and reconstructing Bode diagrams is very tedious and time consuming. By the time the students learned how to construct Bode diagrams, there was little time or energy left to learn how to design the controller. My goal was unfulfilled.

Then I had a dream. My dream was a computer program that would construct the Bode diagrams so that students, technicians, and engineers could concentrate on the design of the controller. The first attempt to realize my dream was a FORTRAN program that generated frequency-response data from the open-loop transfer function. The program made all the design decisions, and all the student had to do was input the transfer function. As an engineering tool, it was great, but as a teaching tool, it failed. Students could complete the design very well, but they did not understand the results. When design exceptions required an override of the program's results, students had no idea what to do—no pain but no gain.

The first program did too much, and the students did too little. The next program generated tables of frequency-response data that the students used to draw the Bode diagrams. It was not as good an engineering tool but was a much better teaching tool. Drawing the graphs took time, but the students did understand the design process.

The third version of the program uses the graphing capabilities of the QuickBASIC programming language. The program DESIGN is an interactive program that plots frequency-response graphs on the screen and accepts user inputs of the control modes. This program emulates the classical Bode design method with precise plots based on the transfer functions of the system components. The designer observes how each control mode changes the shape of the open-loop frequency response of the system. On-screen design decision data allow the designer to determine PID control mode values, which can be easily changed in a "what-if analysis. This enables the designer to use a "design-by-trial" procedure to search for the best possible control system design. It worked; my dream was fulfilled. DESIGN is both a good engineering design tool and a good teaching tool.

This text was developed to facilitate the education of engineering technicians. Its purpose is to train technicians who understand the language and methods used by engineers, technicians who can use established methods to complete engineering design work under the direction of a control engineer.

I believe an essential part of the education of the engineering technician is to develop the ability to communicate with engineers using their language. Mathematical terms are an essential part of this language. The engineering technician must understand and be comfortable with terms such as derivative, integral, transfer function, frequency domain, and Laplace transform—not at the theoretical level, of course, but certainly at the applied level. A goal of this text is to develop an understanding of the language of control, including the mathematical terms mentioned.

COMPUTER DISK ANCILLARY

The disk packaged with this text contains QuickBASIC and executable versions of the four programs used in the text. No knowledge of QuickBasic is required to use the executable versions of the programs. They can be executed directly from DOS on any IBM-compatible computer. You may make copies of these programs and distribute them as you wish. I hope you enjoy using the programs as much as I enjoyed creating them.

CHANGES TO THIS EDITION

The primary emphasis for the seventh edition was a complete rework of the exercises at the end of each chapter. Every section was examined, and every question was reviewed. Numerous exercises were added to provide students with multiple opportunities to develop their grasp of the material.

The review also provided ample opportunities to improve the clarity and accuracy of the text. Example 16.3, a walk-through of a run of program Design, was revised to provide better integration of the text and figures.

Most of the material in Appendix C, "Binary Codes," was deleted because most reviewers felt the material was covered in other courses. Only seven binary tables were retained as reference material.

ORGANIZATION

The book consists of five parts. Part One is an introduction to the terminology, concepts, and methods used to describe control systems. Parts Two, Three, and Four cover the three operations of control: measurement, manipulation, and control. Part Five is concerned with the analysis and design of control systems. Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives and ends with a glossary of terms. There is sufficient material for a two-semester course, and there are a number of possible sequences of selected chapters for a one-semester course. The following are some suggested sequences for one- and two-semester courses.

Semester 2: Control: Chapters 9-16

Not the movie, but still thought-provoking

A whimsical, fun and quick read, made amusing because, unlike in the 1967 movie, the apes live in modern cities, have present-day technology and wear 20th century human clothing. You can see in the book where screenwriter Rod Serling found many of the elements for the movie, but the book is different from the film in many ways, including in its assessment of man. The story begins in the year 2500, and the Heston character is a French journalist who really does travel to another planet. As in the film, he finds a world where apes are the ruling species with language, science and culture, and humans are dumb, inarticulate brutes who communicate by screeches and are exhibited in zoos. Don't expect Serling's crackling scenes and dialogue, or his blunt and searing indictment of humanity, and there is no Statue of Liberty at the end to wrap it all up. The book is much more in the spirit of Gulliver's Travels; our protagonist is at first considered an odd stranger but is later accepted into the society as almost an equal. But you will learn here the reasons behind some of the unexplained features of the movie: why the humans are mute, and how the planet of the apes came to be. The reasons are part and parcel, though, of the statement Boulle wishes to make about humanity: that truly innovative and revolutionary ideas and the people who bring them forth are very few and far between, and that most people really do not think, and simply follow and imitate the practices of those around them and those who came before them. Boulle wants to take our pride in our superiority above other animals, based on our higher intellectual abilities, down a notch or two, and that he has done so becomes clear after you read the last words and set the book down. I first read this book as a boy enthralled by the movie series, when the "Apes" movies were in the theaters, and I still occasionally thumb through my 25-year-old Signet paperback edition of the novel.

Great science fiction

Having been a fan of the movie for years, I was excited to find out that it was actually based on a book. However, the book, while being similar to the movie in theme and idea, was completely different from what I had expected. Starting with two space travelers finding a ship which has been abandoned for some time, floating in space, the book catapults you into the story of Heston, a space travelling journalist who finds his way to and escapes from a planet entirely ruled by apes. The ending of the book is classical science fiction and will be an awesome surprise to anyone who has seen the movie. Although almost entirely different from the movie, I enjoyed the book immensely. While I've found myslef distracted watching the movie at times due to the underlining political themes, the book was duly unadulterated science fiction and I was able to detach wholly into the world of imagination and be enthralled in this incredible story. I would give this book to anyone.

READ THE BOOK TOO

Given the impending release of the movie "THE PLANET OF THE APES" I rented the original movie, which I thought was great. But I just had to read the original book too. (I'm a reader, what can I say?)
I was greatly and pleasantly surprised, quite honestly, about the quality of the book. It was originally written in French trnaslated by Xan Fielding. The prose read extremely well for a translation and the acerbic wit, humor and biting satire comes through loud and clear in the book.
The novel is absolutely wonderful satire. Especially poignant were the scenes where the intelligent human has to witness his fellow human beings subjected to sometimes deadly but always degrading biological and mental experiments. Here, MAN is the object of big game hunts where apes go out and shoot down their human prey for sport. The novel also takes shots at academia and the scientific "establishment", the stock market, and most clearly of all "species-centrism" (or ethnocentrism if you will).
There are a few differences between the book and the original movie. Here, the "Planet of the Apes" is on the other side of the galaxy and is reached through intergalactic flight. Apes are much more technologically advanced than they are in the movie and even have space flight (even if it is described in a somewhat cheesy manner). The apes take over more through the technologcial (and read between the lines, moral) stagnation of mankind than a nuclear holocaust (as in the movie). But for the most part, the movie did an excellent job of telling a similar, yet different story, using the book as it's basis.
In short, I highly recommend the book and the /original/ movie if you haven't seen it. The novel is rewarding in its own right. Hopefully the new movie will be too.

Kelly Pfeiffer is the author, recipe creator, and food photographer behind the healthy living and cooking blog "Nosh and Nourish." Struggling with her weight for her entire adult life, she finally decided life was too short to live perpetually unhappy. She has lost over 55 pounds, maintaining her "new normal" of veggie juices, smaller portions, and less sugar for almost two years. She incorporates nourishing superfoods into every meal for her family and manages to keep everyone happy with her delicious recipes.

A cookbook you'll actually use...and should use often! An indept review...

Okay, full disclosure. I'm a huge fan of Kelly Pfeiffer and her blog Nosh and Nourish. I have been following her for a while now, and I have made a lot of her recipes. What I love about the food that she shares is that they are original creations, they are flavorful and delicious, and they have healthy components as well.

In her first actual "print" cookbook (she does have an e-book cookbook which I also highly recommend), Kelly focuses on recipes that incorporate one or more of the following superfoods: 1) Quinoa 2) Chickpeas 3) Kale 4) Sweet Potatoes 5) Blueberries 6) Eggs 7) Honey 8) Coconut Oil 9) Greek Yogurt and 10) Walnuts. She takes time in the beginning of the book to briefly explain why those ten items are classified as superfoods and gets you excited about using them.

One of the first things you'll notice when flipping through the pages in the book is the pictures. They are fantastic! Don't be surprised if your mouth begins to water just looking at the pages. I know mine did!

The book is broken down into the following chapters: 1) Superfoods and the Nourished Family (an introduction where she introduces herself and her family, tells her story, and teaches you about the superfoods you'll be using in the book. 2) Breakfast & Brunch 3) Appetizers 4) Soups and Salads 5) Sandwiches & Quesadillas 6) Main Dishes 7) Desserts. So as you can see, she has thought of everything.

Within days of owning the book, my wife and I dived in and started cooking. The first things we made was the Tuscan Kale Soup (which includes superfoods coconut oil, kale, and quinoa), Smashed Berry & Balsamic Kale Grilled Cheese (which includes superfoods coconut oil, kale, and blueberries), and our new favorite Orange Butterscotch Bark with Dried Blueberries and Walnuts (which includes superfoods walnuts, coconut oil and blueberries).

The Tuscan Kale soup was fragrant and delicious. We doubled the batch and froze half of it, which I ate while my family was out of town. The Smashed Berry & Balsamic Kale Grilled Cheese was divine! When our guest that we made it for took one bite, her eyes got real big and her chewing slowed as if to savor the flavor (and there is a lot of it!) She had barely swallowed her food before she was exclaiming how she had never had such a delicious and gourmet grilled cheese before. The Orange Butterscotch Bark with Dried Blueberries was so very delicious, that we actually gave them out over the holidays to friends, neighbors, and coworkers in place of cookies. They were a HUGE hit!

I also recommend the Greek Yogurt Blueberry Banana Bread, Perfect Scrambled Eggs, Garlic-Roasted Kale Chips, The Best Sloppy Joes, and Quinoa Meatballs over Penne. I also highly recommend Sweet Potato Pie with Maple Quinoa Crust (which has replaced pumpkin pie in our house) and the super delicious Lemon Cupcakes with Blueberry Buttercream Frosting. My mouth just water a little bit!

And the great thing is, that is only some of the excellent recipes in her 176 page book! What I've always loved about Kelly, it that her story is familiar to so many of us. The signs were there that she needed to make a change in her personal lifestyle for her health, and her family's health. She recognized that as the primary person who brought the food from the grocery store into the house, she had a responsibility to make sure that those food choices were healthy ones. Sound familiar?

Kelly Pfeiffer has done all the heavy lifting in her book Superfoods at Every Meal, crafting a book of easy to make food that will help you incorporate nourishing healthy superfoods into your meals. In a few short weeks, my wife and I have already cooked more out of this cookbook than any other cookbook we own. If you are looking to make a healthy change in the food you and your family eats, you NEED this cookbook!

Amazing Way to Incorporate Superfoods into your Everyday Life!

I LOVE this cookbook. I am admittedly a cookbook junkie, but most of my titles are about things like Pigs, Pimento Cheese and Pies. But we were looking to focus more on our health and less on our vices, and I loved Kelly’s approach. She broke each “Superfood” down and educated us on why they’re super and how to incorporate them into recipes so no deprivation was ever experienced!! From a logistical standpoint, I loved how each section contained its own table of contents at the front. From a design standpoint, the photographs were simply gorgeous! From a cooking standpoint, the recipes were very easy to follow and recreate. And I agree with the author, The Smashed Berry & Balsamic Kale Grilled Cheese might be my favorite recipe in the entire cookbook! But then there’s the Walnut-Crusted Sea Scallops . . . Wait! I almost forgot about the Chipotle Cheesy Corn Dip. You’re just gonna have to buy it and see for yourself! It’s too hard to pick a favorite! This book is a 10!!

I have followed Kelly's blog for years now and was so excited that she was producing her own cookbook. It was refreshing to read as the recipes are not only delicious, but also focuses on simple easy ingredients that benefit the body with nutrient dense foods. Once I received my cook book I ordered the coconut oil and began to experiment with her recipes. You simply cannot get this book and resist planning recipes weeks in advance so you can try all of these yummy creations!
So often I see cookbooks that attempt to deliver recipes to assist in guiding people to healthy ways of life. They fall short where Kelly succeeds in every way! Kelly organizes food by health benefits not by cutting things out or using all those "reduced fat/ sugar" ( which everyone should just read as chemical S#@^ storm). That positive spin alone allows individuals seeking healthier lifestyles to view the adaptions you make as a positive rather than restrictive lifestyle. I enjoy thinking of the good things I can do to support my body from what I have learned in this cook book. I will undoubtedly begin my own experiments with the superfoods Kelly has shown me how to use. I … my family… and my house guests owe her our sincere gratitude for that change in our life.
This cookbook takes regular recipes and breathes new life into them. Swapping out simple ingredients for healthier versions can sometimes be an overwhelming task. Kelly simplifies the process and makes the recipes exciting and new! Her smashed berry & balsamic kale grilled cheese is to die for. .. hands down AHHHH-MAZING ! And if you are having a party try the 7 layer greek dip (with a nutritious base of quinoa!) or the equally delectable and nutritious kale & artichoke dip. I promise you your guests will have no idea they are eating healthy!! This weekend I endeavor to make dark chocolate and peanut butter cupcakes (with chickpeas as a hidden super food!! who would have thought to add those?!?!?) and I guarantee my two toddlers will devour each cupcake without hesitation.
I am so happy to have this cook book as a resource in my cooking. I think you will to ;)

The losely woven and intricate cloth of globalization

A month or so ago, I received a call from an excited colleague who was wondering if I'd be willing to review a book for her. It seems her friend had just successfully published a book and was to begin publicizing it in a round of events. My reply was, "Sure, have the publisher send me a copy." A couple of weeks later, a review copy of Fugitive Denim arrived and I thought, "What have I done? This may be tough to get through." Well, instead I had a tough time putting it down. Far from a dry treatise on globalization, I found myself immersed in the lives of several characters and wanting to know more about them and how they were "getting along." Ms. Snyder, in discussing her book with friends took to joking that it was "about the people in your pants." Indeed! This intriguing story about the people who make our clothes educated me on some of the intricacies of globalization in general and the garment industry in particular. The peoples' stories are compelling; from Mehman Husseinov who loves cotton, to Rogan who designs denim garments with soul and style to Alison and Bono (Paul) Hewson who want to support workers worldwide and Scott, the auditor who said, "The only boundaries that exist, exist in your own mind."

Snyder is an award winning (Overseas Press Award) investigative journalist. She has written for the New York Times Magazine, Slate, Glamour, Jane, Salon and the New Republic. Her considerable skills are on display in this book. She writes in a clear, concise manner with ample footnote and endnote support. Yet she has managed to weave story that wends its way from Cambodia to Azerbaijan to New York and points in between. Her ability to use an incredible amount of detail to build her characters successfully propels the story forward. Snyder has managed to put a wonderfully human face on a very complex issue of pitting our ecosystem against the undeniable forces of globalization and consumerism. From factories to responsible buyers, the story jets from country to country, from person to person and from celebrity to unsung hero.

True to her profession, Snyder avoids preaching or forcing conclusions. Rather she puts facts in front of the reader, with the references for validation, and magically mixes the facts with an incredibly creative wit. Fugitive Denim makes the reader laugh, wonder, and shake her or his head at the sheer complexity of the treaties, quotas and labeling systems we have created.

Fugitive Denim is an intelligent, compelling and well documented story that is a cut above other books on the pervasive effects of globalization in our lives. This is a must read for any government official or business executive involved in international sourcing or commerce - and who isn't these days?

Jeans and the People who Have Touched Yours

Here's a fascinating book about the economic, agricultural, environmental, political and socioeconomic effect of purchasing a pair of jeans. Everywhere you go people are wearing jeans. Everyone I know owns at least one pair. Around the world thousands of people are wishing you would buy a pair of jeans. In fact their livelihood depends on it. The global denim industry is a $55-billion-a-year business.
This book by an international journalist, is an amazing journey from the cotton fields of Azerbaijan to sweat shops in Cambodia, to the politics of Capitol Hill, to an award winning designer whose goal is to save the planet. I now look more closely at the jeans people are wearing and my opinion about buying another pair of jeans has been challenged.

Rachel is a brilliant, funny writer who researched her topic with amazing detail. Despite language and cultural barriers, she was able to get into the hearts and minds of the people who make a living off the making and selling of blue jeans. The garment industry, which employs as many as 40 million people, is an often overlooked industry, and thousands of employees are in jeopardy when bad weather destroys a field of cotton, international tax laws get appealed or a NY designer changes the cut of a pant leg. This book truly is about the people in your pants and the work they do so we can look and feel good in our favorite pair of jeans.

You'll never look at your jeans the same again!

Man oh man, this is a really interesting important and globe-trotted work. I highly recommend following Rachel Louis Snyder's "thread" between countries, working people, cultural icons and raw material. In the process you will learn about some facinating trade laws/practices, labor trends and most importantly your possible impact as a consumer. I found her narrative voice extremely engaging and felt like we coud easily share a conversation and cup of coffee! It is not easy to paint as far-reaching a picture as Ms. Snyder lends us. I can only thank her for the effort and urge readers to open to page one.
