About the Author
Scott O. Lilienfeld received his B.A. in Psychology from Cornell University in 1982 and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Minnesota in 1990. He completed his clinical internship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 1986 to 1987. He was Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at SUNY Albany from 1990 to 1994 and now is Professor of Psychology at Emory University. He is a Fellow of the Association of Psychological Science and was the recipient of the 1998 David Shakow Award from Division 12 (Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association for Early Career Contributions to Clinical Psychology. Dr. Lilienfeld is a past president of the Society for a Science of Clinical Psychology within Division 12. He is the founder and Editor of the Scientific Review of Mental Health Practice, Associate Editor of Applied and Preventive Psychology, and a regular columnist for Scientific American Mind magazine. He has authored or coauthored seven books and over 200 journal articles and chapters. Dr. Lilienfeld has also been a participant in Emory University’s “Great Teachers” lecturer series, as well as the Distinguished Speaker for the Psi Chi Honor Society at the American Psychological Association and numerous other national conventions.

Steven Jay Lynn received his B.A. in Psychology from the University of Michigan and his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Indiana University. He completed an NIMH Postdoctoral Fellowship at Lafayette Clinic, Detroit, Michigan, in 1976 and is now Professor of Psychology at Binghamton University (SUNY), where he is the director of the Psychological Clinic. Dr. Lynn is a fellow of numerous professional organizations, including the American Psychological Association and the American Psychological Society, and he was the recipient of the Chancellor’s Award of the State University of New York for Scholarship and Creative Activities. Dr. Lynn has authored or edited 19 books and more than 260 other publications, and was recently named on a list of “Top Producers of Scholarly Publications in Clinical Psychology Ph.D. Programs” (2000—2004/Stewart, Wu, & Roberts, 2007, Journal of Clinical Psychology). Dr. Lynn has served as the editor of a book series for the American Psychological Association, and he has served on 11 editorial boards, including the Journal of Abnormal Psychology. Dr. Lynn’s research has been supported by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Ohio Department of Mental Health.

Laura L. Namy received her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology from Indiana University in 1993 and her doctorate in Cognitive Psychology at Northwestern University in 1998. She is now Associate Professor of Psychology and Core Faculty in Linguistics at Emory University. Dr. Namy is the editor of the Journal of Cognition and Development. At Emory, she is Director of the Emory Child Study Center and Associate Director of the Center for Mind, Brain, and Culture. Her research focuses on the origins and development of verbal and nonverbal symbol use in young children, sound symbolism in natural language, and the role of comparison in conceptual development.

Nancy J. Woolf received her B.S. in Psychobiology at UCLA in 1978 and her Ph.D. in Neuroscience at UCLA School of Medicine in 1983. She is Adjunct Professor in the Department of Psychology at UCLA. Her specialization is behavioral neuroscience, and her research spans the organization of acetylcholine systems, neural plasticity, memory, neural degeneration, Alzheimer’s disease, and consciousness. In 1990 she won the Colby Prize from the Sigma Kappa Foundation, awarded for her achievements in scientific research in Alzheimer disease. In 2002 she received the Academic Advancement Program Faculty Recognition Award. She also received a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Psychology Department at UCLA in 2008. Dr. Woolf is currently on the editorial boards of Science and Consciousness Review and Journal of Nanoneuroscience.

Jazzer's Heaven

This is another great Joe Diorio book. He breaks 'Giant Steps' down into manageable bits to digest. Lot's of ideas presented,(both linear and chordal), including rhythmic variations. If you go through this honestly you can't help but get better. I think Joe is the master of the 'cool motif' meaning that his licks are memorable and can be taken out of context even to other genres like rock. In this case 'Giant Steps' has repeating chordal clusters two whole steps removed in general and the astute guitarist will get 20 to 30 excellent riffs for each chordal structure. It seems like alot of work for just one tune but it's very justified. It's even in tab which is shocking ! Joe puts alot of himself into these books and his mental energies when it comes to licks and harmonic ideas seem boundless ! If you buy this try the triplet lead pass,(I think it's #5). That solo alone is worth the price of admission but as in all J.D. books it's just the tip of the iceberg !

This book is too much!

I've been a guitarist for close to twenty years and spent innumerable dollars on music, instructional material, and gear. This book ranks as one of my top ten purchases! I cannot believe the amount of effort that went into the examples and text of this work. It's a desktop reference for great lines. There is very little good material out there for the advanced guitarist, but I recommend this book most strongly.

Amazing

Usually I despise "etude" books-long solo's played by a mediocre player that you are supposed to copy...and use how? However, this specific book contains 12 bar solos over the trane-changes, that are so original and cool that they become very inspiring and useful.

Furthermore - usually it seems to be enough to transcribe solos that rock, instead of learning solos that suck, but improv over the coltrane changes really hasn't moved much since trane..Here is a great vehichle for developing further.

They are also very organized. The rest of the book is great!!! I own this, the Intervallic Designs and Jazz Structures for the New Millennium...they are all amazing!

Complete Sabbath History in Detail

Martin Popoff knows his hard rock and heavy metal and this book is excellent. He goes into detail about every lp ever released and goes into depth about the songwriting at the time the songs were written. Tony Iommi's riffs are legendary and so are the details about the history of Black Sabbath in this book. This is a must read for any Black Sabbath or hard rock fan, it has everything, from Ozzy to Tony Martin from Dio to The late Ray Gillian to the legendary Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillian.
This book is the best Black Sabbath book out there bar none and Martin Popoff did a wonderful job. Buy this book.

Probably the best Sabbath book available, very complete.

I have looked at some of the other Sabbath Books, and this one caught my eye. I can say it is probably the most thourough history of sabbath in one book. I was expecting a few more photos, but the history still is killer. It has all of the good stuff, from ozzy leaving, to dio's first comeback and second leaving, and ozzy's return. The history does seem complete from what I gather, including all of the details in transition with the band's line-up over the later years. The picture are nice as well, although I was thinking there would be a few more, it's still good. A must have book for Sabbath fans. Check this one out.

One of the best books on Black Sabbath

The latest book from Martin Popoff covers every era of Black Sabbath from Ozzy to Tony Martin. There are plenty of entertaining stories and each album is explored. This is definitely the highest quality book that Martin has put out. The quality of the paper is very good and there are plenty of excellent pictures of current and former band members as well as pictures of Sabbath memorabilia. If you are a fan of one or all of the eras of Black Sabbath you should get this book!

Case studies in science -- lucid, approachable, fascinating

Depending on your intentions, this book, and its companion volume The Golem at Large: What You Should Know about Technology, could be indespensible. They comprise a number of case studies in contemporary (i.e. 20th century) scientific discoveries and controversies that can be read in any order. The studies are couched between an introduction and conclusion that express the authors' aims -- to show science in action as messy and controversial but nontheless a powerful means for generating knowledge. These slender volumes are ideally suited for a course in the history or philosophy of science.
By exploring how scientists actually conduct themselves and describing the scientific and extra-scientific stakes, the authors (two sociologists of science) dispel many scientific myths in a lucid, approachable style. Even with casual study, they can bolster scientific understanding. The books are of potentially special value to undergraduate and graduate students studying and doing science themselves. I'm tempted to say that if you're a young scientist, these books cannot fail to make you a better one. Even if you're not a scientist, and never intend to be one, these are fascinating stories.
Of course, many scientists have known for a long time what Collins and Pinch have tried to convey. J.B.Conant was such a scientist. His case studies, published in 1957, provide historical examples in the same mold as Collins and Pinch, who explicitly admit to having drawn inspiration from The Harvard Case Studies in Experimental Science edited by J.B.Conant

An excellent and dangerous book

I teach a variety of classes using this text, and often assign individual case studies in tutorials. The point of this modest and infuriating text is to describe the social and evidential processes of science by looking at what they call "disputed science." This is in some ways parallel to looking at what T. Kuhn calls "revolutionary science" (since it is opposed to "normal" science). It is, of course, NOT looking at how everyday science happens (Try Bruno Latour's work for that, or Kuhn's). Opposing reviews are simply what one can expect for a book that enters this domain of disputed science

After they calm down from being angry or confused, my students learn from Collins & Pinch that they need to be thoughtful scientists, and that they cannot simply assume that good method will always save them. They are aware of the "experimenter's regress" -- the process of ever-lengthening methods sections and increased accusation in disputed science. They become aware of the ways that technology, methods, and social assumption shape the science they want to do.

The book will not teach them how to avoid or manage these things, that is the job of more mundane writing. But they are at least taught that science is critically important in our lives.

A must to understand the real nature of research

Somehow it may seem to have no clearly defined purpose, but in reality it achieves what is its main goal: make Science appear in all its laborious, sometimes hesitant, sometimes even confused pace. Which doesn't take away anything from Science, on the contrary is perfect in allowing us to understand how difficult research normally is.

I didn't give 5 stars because I would have like it to be a bit more rich of examples of the frequently tortuous itinerary of scientific research.

"The Production of the Muslim Woman: Negotiating Text, History, and Ideology" by Lamia Ben Youssef Zayzafoon", paperback & hardback (2005), 213 pgs. The author opines that there is no generic Muslim woman. The author focuses upon French colonial and postcolonial influences on Muslim women living in the Maghreb (northern Africa) region. One reviewer (Schirin Amir-Moazami) contends that Zyazafoon's Muslim women do not exist "outside of constructions and that these constructions are always linked with, and even based on, mechanisms of power operating at intersections of race, nation, gender, class, and religion" - something Amir-Moazami believes are frequently similar to those espoused by Edward Said his book: "Orientalism". This work examines the corrosion behavior of reinforcing steel (RC) embedded in concrete mixes of various types by incorporating both Ordinary Portland Cement (Type I) and Sulfate-Resistance Portland Cement (Type V) and Blends with Fly Ash (PFA) or Slag (GGBS). The RC specimens were exposed to wet-dry cycles of chloride and/or sulfate solutions. Theory predicts that under such conditions the electrode potentials of the steel can suffer the formation of anode and cathode regions that depend on cement type and the local environment, so localized corrosion may occur. The final results in this book concludes that using two concrete types in the same structure will lead to the preferential formation of anode and cathode sites. Moreover, this has implications for the durability of real structures whereas the steel, either through design or repair, is embedded in more than one concrete mix type. Furthermore, the results showed that green concrete - containing either 30% Pozzolan or 70% Slag ? had the best overall quality, durability and better performance than Portland cement concrete. An Excellent Overview

I listened to this set some years ago and, to this day, still enjoy revisiting the lectures. Dr. Robinson is an outstanding presenter and makes potentially dry material quite interesting. The 48 lectures cannot go into great depth many philosophical topics but the series does an outstanding job of surveying the field. As for the commentator that derided Dr. Robinson's presentation of Nietzches "hugging a tired horse", he did indeed miss the point of the story. Care for the welfare of a helpless animal says much about a man's philosphy.Buy the series, you will not be disappointed - except maybe if you are a physicist.

[Preliminary review]
After listening to just the first several lectures so far, it's obvious to me already that this is a great series. The lectures are concise, clear, eloquent, and delivered with deep knowledge, insight and passion. Excellent.

I'm looking forward to listening to the rest of this, which I will do immediately. I love it so far.

I've seen a couple negative reviews here that seem very off base to me, so I wanted to get another good review here, so people won't be misled IMHO.

[Update]
I finished most of the series - skipped over a few "minor" lectures - some of the Roman philosophers, the lecture on witchcraft. A very good series. I recommend it. Sometimes a bit like drinking from a firehose, but I recommend it as an introduction.

The Great Ideas of Philopsophy is Great!

I love this course. It is very entertaining and it all flows together nicely. This is the first time I can really put together all the facets of philosophy into a cohesive whole. The professor is very knowledgeable and has a resounding voice and excellent delivery. There is never a dull moment. I went through eight lectures in two days. On the negative side the lecture notes are tedious to follow. There are too long and presented in a cluttered fashion. The packaging of boxes that the CDS came in is very bulky and hard to store.
